Japan doesn't have Reubens.  They do have yakisoba "sandwiches."

Before you have sandwich etiquette, madam, YOU NEED F*ING SANDWICHES.

It's worth mentioning that Japanese sandwiches often have different fillings than what's common in other countries

If you have a sandwich with really squishy fillings, like whipped cream and fruit (which the Japanese do), then it might be better than eating it the normal way and having the fillings squish out the side as you compress the bread.

But I don't see a baloney and cheese gaining anything by eating it sideways

Also no sloppy joe, any of the bbq ones like pulled pork, or the breakfast one with eggs falling everywhere while just sitting there.

That's just not gonna work.  If I buy a sandwich at Potbelly and eat it like that, the stuff is gonna run down my arms.

Elbows up, damnit!

Not to commit heresy before four o'clock in the afternoon or anything, but if you have aggressive bread (especially toasted) turning the sandwich sideways helps prevent slicing up your gums and the roof of your mouth.

They don't usually have anything but white bread for sandwiches. Often, even that goes crustless.

You can't leave bite marks if you eat the entire sandwich in one bite.
