As usual, the author's bio blurb tells you everything you need to know about him:

Kurt Schlichter (Twitter: @KurtSchlichter) was personally recruited to write conservative commentary by Andrew Breitbart. He is a name partner at a growing Los Angeles trial lawyer, a retired Army Infantry colonel with a masters in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College, and a former stand-up comic.

"Making people show an ID to vote is pretty awful for reasons and because and shut up, racist."

We're not opposed to Voter ID.

What we ARE opposed to is how Republicans have used Voter ID as a tool to disenfranchise and restrict voting by those that are unlikely to vote Republican.

Every time a Republican Voter ID initiative comes up and it gets studied it results in the same conclusion; non-whites and the poor will be exponentially effected by it and will result in lower voter turnout.

So....stop doing racist shiat and I guess we won't get to say it any more.

And these voter ID laws are almost always coupled to something that makes getting ID harder.  For example, Alabama passed one of these laws -- and then closed most DMV locations in the state.

Or they limit the types of ID that are allowed.  In Texas, a concealed carry permit was allowed but a student ID issued by a state university was not.

Destructor: Voter ID?

[Fark user image 220x203] [View Full Size image _x_]

Honestly, if we ever saw a genuine approach take hold, I would be too. I don't believe that we have a problem with any sort of widespread voter fraud, maybe some level of electoral fraud that hasn't been proven to this day, maybe, but just anything that could possibly lead to everyone in the country having a common form of ID accepted at all places and easily obtained at no up-front cost (we have taxes for that) would likely have my support. AFAIK, that's what would be required, as any sort of state ID, passport, or driver's license that you have to pay for would constitute a poll tax.

It's downright archaic that I'm expected to retain a small slip of paper that I signed as a wee lad and provide that and a copy of my birth certificate to someone for another form of ID that is massively more robust and able to be verified than either of the two required to get it. My fingerprints are on file pretty much everywhere with my name attached, just from the jobs I've held int he past, but if I lose those old pieces of paper and my wallet in a house fire or something, I'll have hell proving who I am left and right. That's farkin' weird and unnecessary, and it'd just be nice to somehow pull everyone into the latter quarter of the 20th century already, even if it was for the sake of better tilting at windmills.

/And yeah, a passport would tick those boxes if some guy living on a park bench could obtain one as easily as I can without paying a dime.
//Definitely a tedious problem, but it shouldn't be hard if we can just get enough people who care about the right things at the right time in office at the same time. If we can blast out postcards to every enlistment-age man in the country to sign up for the draft, we can probably coordinate something like that.

I don't really know where I land on this. I have to identify myself when I go to vote - they already have my info on the rolls, and I don't feel put-out by ID'ing myself - but there are elderly in my neighborhood who don't have ID readily available, they also employ their right to vote. Of course, they are mostly recognized (small neighborhood) by the poll workers, as well as being of German, Polish, and Irish descent (read: white) so they never get challenged.

I suppose when I see empirical data showing a larger than 1/2000th of 1% issue with non-residents voting, then we can talk. Until then, sadly it's just a dog whistle for other issues.

2021-06-03 10:14:39 AM
so a minority is ok with subverting the will of the majority because they have the privilege of gaming a system built for suppression.  and those in the majority who want to enact laws that benefit all of society are the bad guys.
