(AP News)   There was a time when some believed that black people had lower cognitive functioning than white people. For the NFL, that time was up until... wait, WTF?   (apnews.com) divider line

Did they measure their craniums with brass calipers and then use a quill to mark it in a giant ledger? What. The. Hell?

Maybe they weren't intending to be racist?  Maybe they were just doing it so they would be less culpable for all the TBIs?

They should DEFINITELY have a special profile people who willingly sign contracts for teams like the Bengals or the Lions.

Especially if your job requires the protection of an offensive line.

This isn't that unusual.  The NFL basically refused to give black quarterbacks a chance until the late 80s and even then guys like Warren Moon had to absolutely crush it in the CFL first.  Lots of racists use debunked "IQ science" categorizing people by race, never stopping to consider that:

1) the tests themselves are biased and only a measure of how well someone does on that test, not how smart someone is.  Its very normal to find someone who knows a lot about one topic but basically nothing about another.
2) that standardized testing itself relies on what many (white) people think of as "the typical school experience" but that is only typical for reasonably well funded districts for students from stable homes.  Kids whose families move around a lot or who attend poorly funded schools are at an enormous disadvantage.
3) School funding itself is racist - its tied to property taxes which is tied to home values.  Except identical homes in neighborhoods with identical crime/employment will be priced VASTLY differently if one is in a predominantly white neighborhood vs the other in a black neighborhood.
4) which is also tied to the fact that having intergenerational wealth will also massively improve the odds someone does well on testing in school and the U.S. has systemically blocked POC from amassing generational wealth

It's more of This shiat.

I'm not surprised it's lingering on, especially in sportsball. Sad, but unsurprised.

fun fact: the only guy to ever get a perfect score on the NFL's Wonderlic test is Harvard punter Pat McInally, who went on to play for the Bengals and invent Starting Lineup figures

Jesus, yes.  Though its been going on in some form for... well, probably forever.  Definitely in the same vicinity as the late 1800s eugenics movement that lead to forced sterilizations.

It's times like this where I feel vindicated having zero interest in football.

The NFL is racist trash.

The NFL's overdue for a players' strike.

There are available lessons to be learned here about not instinctually citing every "ist" and "ism" imaginable by default because the noise is more important than the substance. Things like this? This is why avoiding the standard histrionics can pay dividends.

It's ridiculous. Also, doesn't the NFL give most of its players the Wonderlic before they join and has done so consistently since the 1970s? It would be so simple to ask players seeking money for brain trauma to take the Wonderlic again. If the score is outside the score expected due to age based on the original score, the player gets a payout. This is just a blatant attempt to reduce payouts for brain trauma and uses a racist reason to boot.

I yearn for a Twilight Zone moment where white cops (and now NFL owners) wake up one day as a black kid in the power of their previous white selves and get to enjoy the experience from the other end of the whip.

So i thought the test was:
Test on day one
Test after the brain got scrambled
The difference was the amount of brain scrambling

Was there a different slope to the curve based on race?

Here's the test if it's racist. Did one group actually score lower than another at a younger age? If there was a difference, then actuarially...

My assumption is that they don't have or couldn't reliably use earlier cognitive tests for some reason, which would let them make individual comparisons across time, which is why they tried to introduce norming by group.

Now moving onto whether it was actually wise to use that norming technique is another matter entirely. The accountants are finding out that it probably wasn't worth it, even if it was technically justified.

It would still be unfair to compensate individuals for a group score.
If they could do that they could just say that the majority of players do not suffer from head trauma so no one gets compensated.
If there is a class-action suit then ay the entire class the same based on the agreed settlement regardless of race.
If it is case by case then compensate each individual on merit regardless of race.
Race should only be involved if racism is a contributing factor.

Put this on the very, very, very high "Shocked, but not surprised" pile that is America's Racism.

/And some still wonder why Colin Kaepernick kneeled.
