Is the original voice actor dead or something? Not saying I don't like Jack Black, but why change the voice when people already know what he sounds like and are happy with that voice actor?

I'm also baffled at Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis. Neither Tannis, nor Lilith are "not young" - i.e. not middle aged, or approaching retirement age. No offense to the actresses, but this is just reality in this case.

WTF is going on with their casting?

I hope they get Ashley Birch to play Tiny Tina in live action. I loved her the most, and I feel like any other actor just wouldn't satisfy me.

There was some workplace drama and the original voice actor walked away.

Sounds like the script is a twisting of Borderlands 2 (which does have the best storyline, but I don't see Handsome Jack there, and he was a large part of why it was the best).

The actress they got for her (Ariana Greenblatt) is a 13-year old with a bunch of Disney credits, but most people will know her as the young version of Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War.  More proof of a Borderlands 2 rewrite, as she's about 20 or so in BL3.  In this case, the actress' age is spot on.

Tannis isn't that old in the game, but you wouldn't have to change much to make her older.  Lilith, however, is a little more questionable.  Looks like they took the BL2 plot as a starting point and then did about 50 rewrites, though.

I'd have gone with Kevin Hart for Claptrap and hired the Rock for Roland. Wait, what's Chris Tucker doing lately? Ruby Rodd could easily pull off Claptrap.

Also, no Mordecai?

13 year old Disney actor? So no cussing, then. What's the point of Tiny Tina if she doesn't cuss? That's like having a PG-13 Deadpool.

It's a video game movie. That's about as close to a guarantee that it will end up being a festering pile of garbage as you can get. So they're loading it up with big name talent hoping the cud-chewers will be attracted to the shiny movie stars and come flocking.

2021-06-01 6:03:56 PM
I love the Borderlands franchise, despite all its faults, but this movie will just feel like a knockoff.

The voices will be different, the art design won't transfer well to live action, but most of all I won't be able to satisfy my gambling addiction with shooting and looting.

That is the core appeal of the video game. Just a 1st person Diablo with aliens in place of demons.

All those things will clash inside my brain and not feel right.

But hey all the studio cares about is if the non video game playing demographic gives them more money then the cost of putting out a 4th game. (Good bet since the 3rd was lack luster and I'm saying that as I was just playing it yesterday)

I do not understand the majority of this casting:
Roland - Kevin Hart......  Kevin Hart is 5'2". Roland was a pretty big solider.

Claptrap - Jack Black......  I know they couldn't go with the original voice actor, but considering it's a robot, you could have used "anyone"... Jack Black doesn't fit Claptrap too well for me... but maybe he will act like Claptrap, not himself.

Patricia Tannis - Jamie Lee Curtis...... JLC is 62. I don't know... that seems... 20 to 30 years too old to me, not that we have a strict age. She may have the acting chops, but... can she do this kind of dark comedy and really harsh sarcasm? Will it work from a woman in her 60s? Even if she turns her sarcasm up to 11... I'd have to see it to believe it.

Tiny Tina - Ariana Greenblatt...... 13... right age... but an actual 13 year old pulling off the complete insanity, references, and filth that is Tiny Tina... I dunno about that. That would definitely be impressive. A Disney actress? If she pulls it off, she'll never work for the mouse again.

Gina Gershon as Mad Moxxi...... Hmm, Moxxi is kind of a horndog MILF, full of innuendo. I bet Gina can do that. There were other options, but after Brooklyn Nine Nine and some of her other roles... I feel mostly good about this one.

The rest of the cast includes Edgar Ramirez, Florian Munteanu, Janina Gavankar, Cheyenne Jackson, Charles Babalola, Benjamin Byron Davis, Steven Boyer, Ryann Redmond, and Haley Bennett.

I would need to see who they want most of these people to be.

Have you watched Umbrella Academy? Five is played by a 15 year old Nickelodeon star and he cusses and kills through the whole series. He's tasked with a lot and absolutely carries several big scenes. Kids are capable of a lot.

She's actually into gaming at least a little bit. Aging the characters up or down a bit to get someone we know is good who will take the role seriously?  good get.

No on both.

Who would be awesome? The original voice actors. You know, the ones that have spent years as that character. I'm sure the tech team would like another pay check. But no, the fly over demo needs name recognition and "no cartoony bullshiat" to pay money to see a movie.

This is how you get MacGyver reboots. This is how you get New Coke. This is how live action Lion King happens.

This is how you get Michael Bay's Transformers.

Geotpf: Tannis isn't that old in the game, but you wouldn't have to change much to make her older.

Are we sure she isn't that old in the game?  Her presence on Pandora alone predates the corporate war between Atlas and Dahl over that planet, and she was already PhD age at that point.  She is, at least, as old as or older than Jack.

Jack, to put it in the least spoiler-y way that I can think of, has an adult daughter who is played by someone in their thirties or so in the first Borderlands game, who is implied to be Lilith's age as well.

I don't know what the character bios on fan-sites say or whatever, but the actual events of the games would seem to put Lilith in her early thirties at the youngest and Tannis in her fifties or so minimum as of BL1.

... also in BL3 Tannis is a big fan of the first vault hunter whose fame predates the founding of the corporations, which have been around long enough to build and populate cities and planets into established civilizations.  While some of that is probably her being a weird nerd, think about how old you'd assume someone was who only acknowledges the Adam West version of Batman and dismisses even the 1980s incarnations as cheap knockoffs.

// I know it's kinda dumb to take anything in Borderlands seriously, like it has lore or a consistent timeline or even continuity, when it demonstrably hasn't had even a sliver of that much thought put into any of it.  But it is what it is, and it's not like you can tell ages based on appearance; the art style precludes that entirely even if you put aside the sci-fi shiat that makes everyone basically immortal anyhow.
