I would assume part of the agreement is to slowly phase out the Orlando in the name and go by just Melbourne Airport.

/I'm sure that will create some interesting articles in the future

I took my wife to Disney World et al for Christmas a few years back. I hate theme parks so on the third day I rented a car to go into downtown Orlando for a few hours. Holy crap, that's a depressing place. I found a joint to have lunch that was a little seedy which I enjoy but I didn't feel like I was being cased for a mugging.

Gosh my ticket was 3 times the price and it said it would take a day to get to Disney World, how could I have possibly known?!...

For the price of the Disney resort, admission, and fast passes, we could have gone to Paris or Napa and dined at Michelin rated restaurants every night for a week. The things you do for love, though.

Lulz...I still remember flying into Melbourne back in '91.

Oops, I meant to respond in the comment upthread that there will be some interesting articles coming about naming mixups.

But yes, considering how expensive that whole week can be, maybe people won't even notice

Lately in Orlando, you can't even be sitting inside a restaurant without some crackhead begging for money.
And two more outside.
And one by your car.
And two in the restroom.
And at every traffic light.
There is a lot of things I would like to do over there, but between the beggars and I-4 traffic, I avoid it now.

The airport is probably better off distancing itself from that name.

It's 50 miles and a $10 toll away.

Definitely not an Apealltion Controllee.

All the good restaurants are just east of downtown, but there's no obvious way of knowing this.

In my experience Melbourne and Sanford airports exist primarily to ensure that flights to/from MCO are merely 75% shrieking children and their disinterested parents, rather than >95%.

/Our company used to fly people to Orlando semi-regularly to visit a big client
//Only place on earth where our otherwise tightfisted travel policy specified a first-class ticket, no questions asked

I was surprised the whole airport closed  for lunch.

The TSA guy was nice.  Turns out we were in the same Army.  Me a long long time ago.  Him:  A long time ago.  Crossed paths at KKMC maybe.

I moved here from NYC where I was born & raised for 38 yrs.  I felt as if I moved to another planet.  That was 25 yrs ago.  There weren't even any residential apartment building in downtown, let alone a grocery store.  I live about 45 m NW of M Mouse & about 40 m away from O town.  I grew to love it, however, O town will never be a NYC.

That's what it was when I lived there.  Melbourne Airport, that's it.

Grumman developed the J-STARS planes there.  When they came back from Gulf War v1 they did a low flyby of the field.  In tight formation.  Two former 707s.  It was a sight.

It's a trick Ryanair have been doing for years in Europe, finding some Podunk cow meadow or former military base that's cheaper to operate out of than the "real" airport (Frankfurt Hahn!).

In this case, the previous Disney package tour airport of choice for Orlando was Sanford  - Which is still about 40 miles North of the theme parks, but has great access to KKK Rallies and people with no dental plan.  Melbourne has been fighting for years to get a major tour operator to use MLB, and last year TUI signed up for it.  The pandemic put a spanner in the works for the great 2019 launch, but they think they are nearly ready to start this summer.  TUI are planning to fly there from 7 UK airports alone (who knew the UK had 7 airports), and since the demise of Thomas Cook, they have the package holiday sector well sewn up.

Melbourne is about 1 hour from the Orlando airport, so in real terms it's not that much further out.  Whether you will think that after a 9 hour flight or not remains to be seen, but these are bargain basement holiday makers, so cost is more important than efficiency.

This plan has been promoted and proposed before. I'm not convinced adding "Orlando" the the airport name will change the financial viability of the enterprise.

Flying to Melbourne to visit Orlando is like flying to Albany to visit NYC.

Why didn't one of the airports pick the name 'Crazy Vacation Airport' ?...

I prefer when it was just the Melbourne Airport. Meant that no one else knew about it and you could get to the airport 30 minutes before your flight, get checked in AND your bag checked, and on the flight with time to spare.

/flown into MLB more than I want to admit
