On the one hand, people need affordable furniture. On the other though, the garbage being imported breaks within the year and grossly contributes to completely unnecessary consumer waste.

The worst part of consumer trends over the last 20 years has been to loss of the middle. Your choices have been reduced to cheap imported crap or expensive high-end stuff, be it domestic or imported.

Gone are the days of the reasonably priced, decently made stuff and that really sucks.

Maybe this short term pain will help reduce this.

Except it sounds like that customers are refusing to pay the new price, and the retailers aren't able to sell anything. Which will result in them closing, which will result in no more customers for domestic manufacturers, and the death of the industry.

Wait... what?

Nope. You're right of course.
All is lost. Now we will have to sit on the floor like the Japanese until the end of time.

We sold cheap shiat from China then the government made our shiat more expensive. You can't sell shiat at more than shiat prices. It just doesn't work. We're going to have to stop selling shiat or stop selling all together.

Getting a kick because I bought a 40-year old couch almost 20 years ago.  Still in good shape, moved it into the pad by myself.
