Things are worth what people are willing to pay. When it was open, I spent $100US at the Tsukiji fish market on a slice blue fin tuna. I've no regrets.

This is not that. This is businesses (or businessmen) performing advertising stunts. The Houston Rodeo does it a bit more formally, but this is the same in that a businessman overspends to help the community and then get to claim charity and bragging rights. Ultimately it is a good thing but it is not purely altruistic.
