Makes sense, especially with the unknown of travel restrictions.  There is no need for an announcing team on site.  Only thing it will affect is potential b-roll and it is easy enough to get that with the camera team on site.

As long as there are the undercurrents of how much Jon despises Taylor Twellman I'm good.  :)

ESPN doesn't seem to have much of a determination over the circumstances, subby.

Yeah, even before Covid there was a good amount of announcing going on remotely (a decent amount of Olympic coverage for one).

Exactly. There are dozens of reasons to hate ESPN. This is the rare case of not hating them.

Those 2 remind me of father and son fighting about when music was better.

the only time I've seen the remote broadcast be notably bad was a recent USWNT friendly, where the announcer seemed to be streaming the game himself on a DSL connection, causing a 12 second delay.

but that budget was slightly smaller than this one.

There was a recent cricket series (I think it was India v. England last year, in India) where the BBC commentators weren't even in the studio.  They were all doing their radio commentary from their homes!

ElwoodCuse: ESPN hire Ray Hudson challenge

He calls matches from a studio in Florida, so at least he has experience here, and Hudson is certainly more entertaining than the average bear. Plus he would make sense as an ESPN hire since they just picked up La Liga.

Always or just since the pandemic began?

NESN has had its announcers for Red Sox and Bruins call away games from the studio for the past year. You get the added fun of Jack Edwards biatching out the director for not putting the right camera feed on the monitor for replays.

Also,

"It's a bit like putting a straightjacket on really in terms of what you can do"

It's straitjacket (as in "tight-fitting"), not straight (as in "not bent or crooked").

Jon Champion is one very skilled announcer so I'm guessing he'll sound just fine.  And ESPN can't do anything about the travel restrictions and quarantine rules.

They did put just about the entire FA Cup on the streaming service so, as usual, fark ESPN and their owners.

Now I can say I learned something today.
