(WFLA Tampa Bay)   Shooting yourself in right thigh while picking up case of soda in Walmart is bad enough. But to NOT have concealed weapon permit for said gun in state where they practically grow on trees makes you candidate for Top Florida Man of 2021   (wfla.com) divider line
More: Florida, Firearm, Concealed carry in the United States, 30-year-old Kyle Griffith, arrest affidavit, Pinellas County man, alleged incident, felony charge, jail records

That case of sodas was threatening to throw Mr Griffith's back out. He feared for his safety and stood his ground.

It's true what they say: The only thing that can stop a dumb buy with a case of soda is that same dumb guy with a gun.

Florida is not the easiest state to get a CCW in, but it's pretty damn simple.  So no excuse.

The easiest is New Hampshire.  No permit required.  You want to carry?  Go for it.  Washington (state, not DC) is possibly the second easiest.  Just fill out a form and pay a small fee and you are good to go.

The true mark of stupidity is not that he shot himself, it's that he thought he was being sneaky by sliding the gun to his brother. Forget about witnesses, they have cameras in stores.

I was going to blame it on a cheap "uncle mikes" style holster until I actually read the article, which says he was carrying it in his waistband with no holster at all. Can't say I feel sorry for the guy

Yeah I think that's more or less what modern firearms do, discharge suddenly.

Boot camp: "breathe in, breathe out, find the natural pause, the weapon should surprise you when it goes off" follow that with some other foundational practices and you'll put it in the center ring from the 500 yard line, over iron sights.

Yep. Gonna get two felony convictions, prison time, and when he gets out and gets caught with a firearm again, a lot of prison time.

At least he won't be able to vote for a while.

Felony charge for this?!

If you don't have a license but you otherwise qualify for one (not prohibited from possession), it should be just a fine of 2x the cost of the license and part of that fine is they mail you a license.

Walmart is a hive of scum and villainy.  Maybe consider shopping at a slightly more upscale place where you don't need to strap on a piece in order to get through the parking lot alive.

Florida carry permits are so easy to get, they give them to people who don't even live there. That's right, Florida issues mail order carry permits that are valid in the vast majority of the USA.

It's the Devry of Carry permits, but easier to get.

What?

You gonna apply that rule to every license?

Driving?  Dentistry?

I've got a strong libertarian streak, and I think we have far too many occupational licenses, but I'm damned sure opposed to people getting a mulligan for ignoring the rules.

Firearms violations are violent crimes, and should be punished as felonies, just like other violent crimes. They are crimes committed with the extreme potential  to harm others, in depraved indifference, at the very least.
If someone's psychopathic need to possess a killer weapon overrules his willingness to obey the law, he needs to be locked up and the key thrown away - we don't need any more people running around loose who "like" guns.
No psychologically healthy, adult individual "likes" guns. Adults who fetishize guns are like kids who torture animals - they need watching. Adults who are willing to break laws in pursuit of their gun fetish need watching in confinement.

Judges do it here. No license because excuses but you can just go get a license? Case is continued, judge says "Go get a driver license," and it's dismissed if they come back with a license.

Hell, for me it was driving while my license was suspended (for 3 months). Judge: "Is the license valid now? Yes, it's been reinstated? OK, case dismissed."

That's not entirely what those in black robes have decided.  You may deprive somebody of their right to own firearms but... "nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law" -- those words are in the Constitution and unlike the few before it the black robes have decided those particular words do have meanings.

So, feel free to strip them of rights, but you need a reason to do it and a judge or two will have to agree.

Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, MIssouri, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming all have permitless carry too.  It's not just unique to New Hampshire.

I do what they call "Israeli carry", when I carry. Full magazine. Not charged. Not chambered. If I ever need it, I can draw and chamber in about 3 seconds. Ask most 2nd amendment gun humpers, and I "might as well not even carry". Somehow, that's not "armed enough". But I'll never shoot myself in the thigh.

The one huge downside is trying to chamber a round with one functional arm/hand. If you're in a situation where your non-dominant hand is occupied defending yourself from a physical assault or holding someone for some reason (detaining them), it's a problem to have one free hand to rack that pistol slide.

Oh, absolutely - never meant to imply otherwise. People who don't like the things people in black robes sat need to elect different politicians, to appoint different people in black robes.

Robbing a bank is nothing like beating up another drunk in bar over some girl.
But they're both violent crimes.
So, two things that are "nothing alike" can still be violent crimes!
The more you know!!

You know, most gun owners are not psychos.
Most gun owners, as far as I can tell, are like me - they own an appliance, and that's it.
They respect it's danger, and keep it safe and hidden in case they ever actually need it - and extremely rare event in our society.
They don't "like, or "love" their guns, or need to take them out and play with them, or carry them down to the 7/11 to get a quart of milk.
In addition to that, gun laws in our society are practically non-existent. Anyone who cannot navigate their way around our pitty-pat gun laws to arm himself adequately is defective (or else a wife-beater, felon, sex offender), and shouldn't have a gun.
The very fact that someone breaks gun laws is a tip off that they are a disordered and dangerous individual, and should not, under any circumstances have guns.
If you have to break gun laws, you are stupid and desire guns too much.

The mere action of carrying a concealed firearm is not a crime. It's especially not a violent crime.

If all that separates the action from being illegal is some paperwork, and the person doing it qualifies with that paperwork, it's a minor regulatory issue instead of being a crime.
