Their personalities make a lot of sense together.  They're both pretty clueless and basic.

Considering how competitive their respective fields are and how wildly successful each is, I really doubt "clueless" applies. I think they both know how to turn on their charm for the cameras, but there's not a doubt in my mind they're both shrewd and competitive.

Hell, Jost graduated Harvard with honors and was the editor of The Crimson, then made his way from the bottom at SNL to head writer and WU anchor in like five years.

I probably should have said oblivious.  Having said that, either Jost was just horribly unsuited to being head writer, or Lorne's sense of humor  is wildly different than mine, because SNL has really stunk under him.  A big chunk of that was due to the poor decisions of the Trump years, in spending their time bringing in non-cast to play Trumpworld characters, which probably wasn't Jost's fault.  FWIW I don't find Che funny either, and he's a really odd dude (google Michael Che soup feud).  But even outside the de rigeur Trump sketches, which it felt like their heart wasn't in, the overall show was mediocre unless they had a particularly talented host.  Weekend Update became skippable, which is the second time in my many years I've felt that.  First was Colin Quinn whose delivery made me want to die.

Scarlett had that bizarre Ghost in the Shell movie we've all chosen to forget, plus her couple whitewashing comments that were puzzling, to put it mildly.

They just seem made for each other, so they can have lame arguments over $20,000 couches or designer pets.

That's fair. I can absolutely see that. Che in particular is a really odd guy, but I love that about him.

I love the more character and idea-driven bits, plus the refusal to rely on game shows and repeating sketches feels like a breath of fresh air after the Fey/Meyers years. That said, the Trump cold opens became eye-rollingly bad at the last 2 years and the strategy of "let's make Kate, Beck, or Kyle act weird when we're out of ideas" has led to some really dull sketches at times.
