Dr Alex Rawcliffe, who is leading the programme, said initial findings indicated 'significant improvement' in how the new kit supported the recruits during their basic training.

Nice...

Good. I couldn't imagine wearing a bra not designed for multi-day wear felt after 24 hours.  For all of you out there not blessed with a nice rack, an ill-fitting or mispurposed bra farking hurts to wear.

Somewhere there is a forty-seven page, olive drab manual written in simple English this basic English with detailed, step-by-step instruction on how to unfasten the clasp. Page 46 - "WARNING: The nipple is not a radio knob and should not be twisted unless by prior arrangement. Twisting could result in premature termination of happy fun time."

FlameDuck: we live in an age when underwear is political

This is a purely practical matter of improving soldier performance. The primary thing that makes it political are people who have problems with women being in the military.

That said, clothing has always been political.

There was a 57 per cent reduction in poor posture and an 18 per cent drop in upper-body muscle pain.

So is this a British issue, or an world wide issue?  I think we need more research!

Article needs more before/after pictures so we can determine if the project is worth taxpayer dollars.

FTFA: An Army research team working with the University of Portsmouth found that 85 per cent of recruits had problems relating to poorly-fitted bras.

I'm glad to see UK Army recruits are getting needed supplies. I hope the US armed forces are similarly equipped.

Why is this on the politics tab?  I think we all agree there is bi-partisan support for boobies.

No, liberals support boobies; conservatives elect boobies

One side wants to free the boobies, the other side wants the boobies covered and hidden.

US Army came out with this a few years ago.

Back in the days of Usenet News it seemed there were regular threads that went something like:

"There are no decent bras they all suck."

[Someone trying to be helpful points to an article similar to this one, about custom fitted bras as sports or personal protective equipment]

"I SAID THERE ARE NO DECENT BRAS THEY ALL SUCK!  DIDN'T YOU HEAR ME?"

These threads could crop up in any newsgroup.

I remember the American military was looking into this issue at least a decade ago, but I don't know if they actually adopted anything, or just make women buy the approved sports bra.  In addition they found that the way bras, and underwear, both for men and women, were made, were really bad for people who have to deal with fire and explosive shockwaves, so the new tactical underwear was constructed from materials that wouldn't melt into your flesh during a fire, and all metal clasps were removed from bras so they wouldn't turn into break into spalding projectiles beneath the body armor, when the outside of the body armor was struck by a lot of force.

I remember at the time, Mormon service members were faced with wearing the safer tactical underwear that would actually protect them, and their magical underwear that they were taught would protect them, but was actually much more dangerous, and the church was not making a tactical alternative for servicemen and women.

Some people'll biatch, and let a situation stay bad. Others look for solutions :)

That material being cotton, according  to my lab safety training.  They were talking about clothing in general, not just underwear.
