It's not even a very good calculator.  The button layout is scattershot, it doesn't do radians, there's no exponent button for scientific notation (the "e" in 5e24)...

The calculator is amazingly bad. Apparently farks up order of operations, the cursor is inaccurate, and it apparently breaks for numbers a billion or higher. It's incredible they're charging $10 for a calculator, a very easy thing to program, that doesn't even work

We're being serious - news is slow right now.

It's as if 90% of our news content disappeared in the last 4 months; wonder what happened?

The Fire Emblem game has me addicted, but I'm not actually going through the story, I'm just grinding my levels up to get new character classes.

What happens when you punch in nine nines, select the square root, and then the integer?

For those of you who haven't played Fire Emblem, this means moothemagiccow is having lots of tea parties.

It's handheld and doesn't require WiFi. So as long as you've got a decent solar charger or whatever it'll work just fine.

Except when it gets fried by EMP.

If we're back to the point where we need to rebuild from a state where all electronics are destroyed, your slide ruler will pretty much be a gimmick as well.

When we're picking post-apocalypse teams in that scenario, I'll take the one with an healthy supply of shovels over the one with an healthy supply of slide rulers.

It's probably why they don't bother putting any effort into fixing their shiatty controllers and just give all the children and perverts and children of perverts a new set every six months instead.

Actually, no.

The ability to quickly do complex math without having to have things like logarithm, sine, cosine, and tangent tables would be very valuable.

Even just to do things like multiply and divide large numbers very rapidly would be a large bonus.  Sure, you could do it on paper manually, like you learned in grade school, but when was the last time you sat down and did long division?

/That's my every day carry rule.

Sliderule: Handheld, works perfectly with solar power, does not require wifi, will survive emp. Hmm 😒

I was thinking of getting the Switch one since I haven't played a FE game since Radiant Dawn...

I don't remember any sort of grinding being possible... IIRC specialized VIPs joined your cause and you could recruit more generic cannon fodder/replacements in between battles but that was about it. The cascading nature of the game usually meant if I lost a battle a few times in a row it probably meant I should start a new file and try not to lose as many d00dz (hate save-scumming, personally, I kind of get annoyed by CoD4 style games with checkpoints every five feet).

I can still do long division by hand, even if it would take a bit longer. I'll start worrying about logarithms, sines etc when we've finished digging wells for water, canals for irrigation, and creating fields for food.
