Oh no, poor local Martians will get the coronavirus! They might go extinct because of China!

Anyway, I expect to see rocks from Mars and other products on Aliexpress in a few months.

Of course they did. Pretty sure it is with stolen tech from the US lol.

Tombstone with the heavy bar. End Game or Minotaur at full spin-up. Bronco or Hydra.
BattleBots in Martian gravity would be awesome!

Hey Mars is America slut. We have been dropping rovers on Mars for how long? We are something like 5 for 5 on sticking the landing. So China coming along and putting a probe on Mars, is a bit like the meme about aircraft carriers. The only thing I think is more impressive is Russia's command of Venus. They have dropped more then one probe into that atmosphere, that has survived long enough to send data back.

1. The Maobot is obviously stolen USA tech from the Spirit/Opportunity era. Early 00's at best.

2. And, they're soon to find out why JPL stopped using solar panels on their rovers in favor of RTGs.

AAAAGGGGHHHH: 1. The Maobot is obviously stolen USA tech from the Spirit/Opportunity era. Early 00's at best.

Not that they are unwilling, bur the similarities look to me being of the same problem, similar solution variety. The landing system, you know the hardest thing to get right, is very different from Spirit and Opportunity. So it is no a clone.

2. And, they're soon to find out why JPL stopped using solar panels on their rovers in favor of RTGs.

And now YOU will find out why Curiosity and Perseverance use RTGs.  They are too big to power with solar. This rover like Spirit is much lighter than Curiosity so solar is the appropriate choice. JPL will use solar where they can get away with it as they cost less and have a much smaller mass. Heck, I'm still shocked that they managed a solar probe at Jupiter. That would have once been called impossible.

Five bucks says China is the first nation to get people on Mars. They may die horrible deaths but given how China has grown in population and it seems like people are disposable over there I think they can do it before any other nation just by throwing everything on the wall so to speak and seeing what sticks.

I think there's a lot of people who'd take the 100% guaranteed horrible death in order to be the first human to walk on Mars.

https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/juno/launch/Juno_solarpower.html

Chinese-made solar cells from 2010s were much more efficient than the American-made ones from the 1980s and 1990s. Juno's solar-cell arrays are huge compared to the size of the spacecraft, large enough that their spin rotationally stabilizes the craft like a gyroscope.

NASA has made an existence of minimizing weight and budget to get the job done. It would be amazing to see what they could do if they were actually funded properly.

Yes the Russians  did copy the Shuttle (or rather intentionally bogus plans our side made sure they got).  But, I notice you are not quoting my mentioning that the hardest thing to do does NOT resemble Spirit and Opportunity as you would expect if it was a clone. This mission is very different in the details and details count.

Snark aside, congratulations to China!
That's a big deal, and I think some competition will energize the US Space program.

If we're the only people in the game, people lose interest in playing. If we have competition, we may step up to stay ahead - and that's good for Humanity.

/favorite XKCD alt text:
"The universe is probably littered with the one-planet graves of cultures which made the sensible economic decision that there's no good reason to go into space--each discovered, studied, and remembered by the ones who made the irrational decision."

Any big brains know how, when Mars is colonized, national borders will be divided and decided upon? More war on another planet? Same old, same old? Who takes claim to what areas? First come first served? Same religious wars? New stories of Martian holy sites to fight over? Gonna be interesting in the next 200 years. A Trekies wet dream. Where would be prime real estate? Where would you want to avoid at all cost? What jobs would be kick-ass on Mars? What would it suck to work as? Anyone alive today that would be a worthy 1st world leader on Mars? Or is a fresh clean slate a way better option?

I'm sure Congress will be very quick to pay Blue Origin and Boeing another $20 billion for some Powerpoints and pretty renders of rockets that don't exist.

If there was actual international sharing of data and research, that'd be pretty awesome. As it is, it's still cool, but whether or not humankind gains anything from it? Who knows.

Lots of useful industry can be done on mars. Fabrication with semiautonomous AI would be reasonable if we're already assuming a Mars colony level technology. Machining parts big and small could be done very efficiently. And since the human population would be minimal, the planet could be used as needed for raw materials.

A... Forge world if you will. (sorrynotsorry)
