Interesting point.  Let's check the numbers!

70-75 million baby boomers
65 million Gen X
72 million Millennials

Thanks to baby boomers dying off, Millennials are considered the biggest group, by population

I had a boomer walk up to me as I was hanging out in my refrigerator box and he said to me "you know, when I was your age, I left home with $16, bought myself a home, a car, and a family! Maybe you should stop being so lazy and entitled!" So I went off unemployment, used my master's degree in bio engineering to get a job at Buffalo Wild Wings shaping their meat goo into boneless wings, and now that I'm making minimum wage I can't make enough money to pay rent on my refrigerator box. Thanks boomers.

You know, if you get a fourth job, you won't need to pay rent on your refrigerator box because you'll never be there anyway?

I was gonna say the OP is kinda meaningless with population numbers. I am dismayed by the fact that my generation is smaller than 'millennials' but it does make logical sense. Anyway we should think in terms of class, not generation.

This is why I root for the kids and others who bought all that Gamestop stock. Watching these modern-day pharaohs with more money than they could spend in 50 lifetimes hoard it while people starve and claw and pay student loans and are lectured to...

Well, let's just say it's funny when they panic because some outsiders understand the system they farked up.

Yeah, because Boomers inherited an economic paradise and decided to snort the crystallized blood, sweat, tears, anguish, and misery of their children to sustain their own joyride instead of investing in the future or in their own children.

Millennials and Zoomers have been scammed and sold up the river into lives of starvation wage slavery to pay for their parents' and grandparents' new cars.

The economy is rigged, and the Boomers holding all the mechanisms of power and capital would rather die rich than let their children and grandchildren have a taste of their prosperity.

Super useful advice for a generation that's been hard-locked out of property ownership by a combination of redlining-equivalent practices by millennials and in some cases actual law.

Thanks for your interest in why the poors don't just buy more money, though, your very valid concern is noted and definitely not the stupidest thing any of us will read on the internet all day.

Uhhh the old people who engineered the economy to sustain their golden era of easy money while impoverishing everyone after them are certainly the enemy, and it's certainly a generational plot when THEY are the ones who have designed it to operate this way and refuse to raise wages and have done away with pensions now that THEY'RE cashed out with pensions and have a beach house.

This trait is so precious, the wild defensiveness.

Yes, we were supposed to buy all the assets you soaked up and held on to, apparently like farking morons, to fund your wet dream retirements of fancy boats and "full time thai massage aides".  All the while most of us were shoved into the arms of corporations to work for less than you ever made to prop up those same  holdings.

My coder friends all ended doing shiat IT for car parts suppliers with 5 employees and stuff like that. Nobody with an MA in Comp Sci or above got a job in Canada, live in shiathole countries where they are paid like a god but nobody has rights, etc.

Learning to code is a dead end. The Boomers filled all the slots and gave Millennials the amazing presitgious paid summer intern jobs then let them starve when they graduated. Boomers farking suck.

......bought a family? I'm worried.

First of all a non-working spouse and children cost a lot of money these days. A lot.

Second I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the implication of the purchase of humans. We had a war about that. Some folk try to spin it as being about states' rights or wealth. I know why those guys kicked Virginia's ass. One dude went as far as Atlanta with fire in his eyes. I might not have gone that far. It's a little warm down there in the summer months. Ain't any peach gonna quench that sort of thirst.

Interesting stats but why does everyone always quibble about which generation farked things up like it was some collectivist decision? Everyone is just living their lives - it's the billionaires sucking the life out of all of us. Wages stagnate yet productivity and profits and stonks keep going up. If those coders don't mind getting up from a desk once in a while, they should learn ladder logic programming. There's been a shortage of PLC programmers for as long as I've been doing it, except maybe for those couple months in 2009. It ain't "sexy" like people pretended coding was circa 1999 but there's a steady demand, it pays well, and there's enough kinds of roles to fill for everyone.

Is that what you have, really?

Boomers were the largest generation in history; their parents grew up in a time where the USA was a poor, broken nation. That the Boomers were able to amass more wealth than their parents who came of age during dark economic era is not surprising.

Millennials are now the largest generation; their parents grew up in a time where the USA was on the winning side of a global war with little to no damage to show for it. That they struggle to amass even the equivalent wealth to their parents who came of age during the biggest boom in American history is not surprising, either.

Seems like a lot of whinging and crying about how 'unfair' life is compared to what Boomers were handed. Yeah, sorry, if you go back over the last 1000 years, pretty much every generation had it worse than the American boomers. Millennials aren't special in that regard. Hell, Boomers from most of Europe had shiatty lives growing up in the post-war, reconstruction hell that was the 1950s and 60s.

Doesn't change the calculus - work hard at school, get a marketable degree, save for retirement, and you'll probably turn out okay. Nothing is guaranteed, but if you fail to do those things you can almost assuredly guarantee failure.

And if you're born too poor to do either of those? Or, for that matter, in an area that doesn't bother to properly fund its public schools, choosing instead to let them fall apart?

Because millions upon millions of Americans are in that exact situation.
