Did buying packs of thick pieces of paper and getting like 8 doubles and 1 new one get a lot more fun in the last 30 years?

Huh. Wonder what my MTG cards are worth these days...

No, but there's a lot more options for what they print on the cards now.

Sports and gaming cards have become the latest get-rich-quick scheme popular with Youtubers.  Because kids trying to collect a simple set weren't already priced out of the market because of collectors hunting for triple-black-diamond game-worn jock strap inserts.

The Walmart near me is where I could usually pick up the latest MTG cards on release day.

Now they are gone 15 minutes after the store opens. If I'm lucky I've seen them stocking them the day before.

I mean FFS occasionally some of those cards in the preconstructed decks end up worth more than what they paid for the box.

Your collection is worth zero until someone makes an offer. Happy to be out of dead tree.

/last sale was a stack of ice age snow covered lands for $5.
//spent that $5 on a beer at the tent on Georgia street. It was a good night

Anyone else remember the Comic Book bubble of the 90s?  Why do I see that happening again in the near future?

The 90s really are coming back!

eBayers are the farking worst.

I understand they have to make a living, but like scalpers they demonstrate the need for an asshole tax.

/NM, $925. About 1/4 it's worth.//Most expensive card(AND IT AIN'T MAGIC) -  ...has *NO* price...1995 Pre-Imperial Bayushi Kachiko L5R promo signed by Zinser himself. Yes, seriously... how did *I* wind up with one of the rarest cards in all gaming?Paid $125 in 2001 for it plus traded a MINT Beta Shivvie (It was about $400, then...), and then threw in my complete copy of Core Rules 2.0 + All Expansions(Note: Sigh... yes... the physical copy... the one that TSR released a literal 18 days before dying. It's... REALLY RARE and REALLY expensive now, since it was the last thing they made aside from some late-print Alternity books... and I paid $300 for it a year earlier...)How rare is she? According to Mile High Comics, ABU (who I talked to for WEEKS about pricing and selling), and T&T... 'She  has no price. Maybe 100 sets were made, so there were 100 of her, but now? Maybe 10 or less.Unless you start talking about Imajica, 1E Pokémon promos or Ani-Mayhem DBZ cards...it's the rarest card in gaming you'll ever see. Period. AND YOU HAVE IT."/$4,250 -$7,000. But, "People tell lies with plain faces, while we wear masks to speak truths."...so, that was the "Never Gonna Sell Her" moment. It ate the end of my post:

...if I had all the other objects, they would be worth MORE than her... but, I'd still rather slam a shiat MTG Plains in the middle of a game with "Kidney Thief" on it... and then drop her penny sleeved, ProGuard Black Shield (OOOOLD) sleeved, Ultracet screwed-down hot ass on the table and watch some Jade Lion player silently crap themselves.

/TS: I have a female friend who plays. If she sees her get played she does a pitch-perfect 'Thaaat's Hooot' Paris Hilton impression, or says, "Yeah... I'd bang Queen Turbo Slut, too." If I use her ability on an opposing personality. If I use it on a (They're rare) Female combat personality, it's "SCISSORS TIES!" (rock-paper-scissors... also, seductress...) No, this person, she is *NOT* an attractive woman... she'll tell you that. But she's funny as hell.

The marketing departments at these companies know what they're doing, they intentionally created this collector and scalper mess. Now exacerbated by YouTubers.

Why people worship talking heads on YouTube is beyond me.

Latest?   Donrus and Topp were printing baseball cards like madmen in the late 80s and early 90s.   In the early oughts I was buying pallets of them (literal pallets of them) for pennies, and selling them for nickles.  I paid $300 for a small storage unit full of mid era cards once.

I used to get a stick of gum with the cards I bought as a kid.   Now all I get is a sore back.

Twitch streamers too.  There are maybe 5 I'll watch semi regularly, 2 or them started doing "card streams" where all they do for several hours is open Pokemon cards, value them, and sleeve anything worth while.

I'll admit I watched a few, and am convinced they break even at best.  They'll go through a box or two and get maybe 2 cards worth more than a buck.

It's really funny by itself, somewhere between Patrick Bateman and the "we got a badass here" image.

It almost sounds like Harrison Ford's soliloquy in Blade Runner.  "I paid $300 for a small storage unit full of mid era cards once.  Time to die."

Last year I gave a binder of uncommon rares and 2 shoe boxes of uncommon and common  Revised, 4th ed, Ice Age, FE, and Alliance cards to a friend's teenaged son before he left for college.
He flipped through the first two pages, said "Are... You... Sure...?"
"Use em, collect em, trade em, or sell em for beer money. I don't want them anymore."
//He points at a Revised ED Demonic Tutor on the first page\\
"That one card is worth..."
"Stop. Do me a favor, spend it on GOOD beer. Invest it in crypto, buy a computer I don't care and I'm not sure i want to know."

I threw out my grandfather's baseball cards. They weren't even the same size as modern cards, worthless crap. Who would buy a small card, when nicer looking full sized cards are available at the store?

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Vandalized bats off the shoulder of Billy Ripkin. I watched Pokemon holograms glitter in the dark in the Ebay item descriptions. All those profits will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

I was thinking older...about 100 years give or take.  I mean, we had Hilter's first term, the creation of the Nazi party, he's trying to come back and has a lot of the gov't on his side.  We've had a new epidemic.  Anti-maskers...and more.

Why not 100 year old hobbies?

So...what's next?  I have to go look up history stuff real quick.
