I've got a huge backlog I want to play.  Been playing AC:Valhalla.  Really want to play Immortals: Fenyx Rising.  I keep going back to The Binding of Isaac because it is familiar, and I want to see how overpowered I can make Azazel before it's game over.

I got to play that exciting game of "Charlie Brown & the Emotional Football". Oh, it's great. You spend 6-7 months of game time texting and making "plans" (too keep it Fark friendly) with the cute redhaired girl only for her to cancel all that & it turns out it was Lucy pranking you the whole time.

But hey.... Remastered Mass Effect comes out tomorrow!

(To distract me from all that disappointment, I decided to go back to a simpler time, when girls were icky by playing lots of early 80's arcade games: Mr. Do, Omega Race, Q-bert, Rally-X, Tutankham, etc. Still suck at Space Fury after all these years. Congo Bongodeserves more love than it gets.)

As far as sports games the only things I've been playing is Skater XL and PGA 2K21.  The latter was pretty weird to get accustomed to because my muscle memory has been configured to the Tiger Woods franchise for so long.  But it's still fun nonetheless.  I never online gamed in the past, but since the pandemic hit I've been using it to keep in touch with friends since I don't have Facebook or anything.  I can play a couple rounds of golf with my friends online a couple times a month and that's way better than texting or emailing.

I got Animal Crossing New Horizons last Friday and as expected it has taken over my life. A lot different, and better, than Wild World.

I've seen a few videos over the year about players trying to kick residents out because they didn't like them. I always thought it was strange to hate on an animal character in a video game. A game mainly aimed at children.

I have since changed my mind.

That fat f*cking pig Cobb is going to be the first one on the chopping block. That asshole moved in Monday and already has been in three arguments with the other residents. And expects me to help him make it better by delivering presents to them.

F*ck you, pig. I gots bugs to catch a dress-up to play.

Part 2: Madden 93 for the Sega Genesis.

Got inebriated last weekend and purchased another year of War Thunder premium. I guess I'm going after that crazy Swedish jet.

I played a bit of the NHL console games in the late '90s/early '00s with room mates, those were fun. But I got to go older than that for all time fav:

Not too much gaming this week, just a bit of Mechwarrior Online and CS:Go.  I'm kind of bored of everything and can't find the motivation to try anything new.

I have been playing a few metagames:
The first was actually getting serious about getting a new videocard.  I joined some discord groups, and bookmarked a few sites.  It beats listlessly checking amazon once or twice a day.

The second metagame was the 'sell some of my CS:Go crap for steam summer sale money'.  I have over $1000 in csgo skins from 'investments'.  So, I'm figuring out what to sell for ~$100 to spend frivolously in a month.

The third was working a bit on some of my gamemaker projects.  I got a bit more done on some of the physics and enemy AI.  I think I'm going to do a mini game jam for myself this weekend and see if I can re-create Robotron and/or Berzerk in under an hour or so.

Best sports game - NHL '93 for the Sega Genesis.  Runners up: NFL Blitz, Gran Tourismo.

Xbox had the old NHL game. Or one of them. I used to love those.

I seem to have forgotten how to score and got pissed off and deleted it in a fit of anger at losing again.

I'm not much of a one for survival horror type games, so naturally, something I have never played is a Resident Evilgame. I'm aware that they're also known for being a bit goofy and that Village is also known for the Big Vampire Lady that's inspired a whole lot of horniness on Twitter.

So, naturally, as someone who's not a fan of horror and survival stuff, I've been indulging in playing Alien Isolation. I'm finding it extremely nerve-wracking and anxiety inducing, especially when LucklessWifeder let out an almighty scream right behind me as she watched me play and we got our first jump scare in seeing another human survivor out of the corner of our eye on the screen.

That survivor turned out to be Axel, who helped us get close to the transit station and then had this happen to him:
Fark user imageView Full Size

Which I think was the first in-game inkling we had that there was a Xenomorph on the space station. Also, running into the transit train and waiting desperately for the door closing animation to complete before the titular Alien could get in the train car with me definitely spiked my heart rate.

With that, I definitely needed something more chill to play, and so I returned to the more cerebral frustration of Baba Is You. I wasn't in the same flow state as last week, but I did manage to finish out the Rocket Trip area and the entirety of the Flower Garden area (including the two extra levels) though after this:
Fark user imageView Full Size

I'll be happy not to see the "ON" or (especially) "MAKES" keywords ever again.

Also, now that it's available as a phone app as well as a PC game, I've been dipping my toes back into Magic: The Gathering - Arena:
Fark user imageView Full Size

I still haven't really looked into the Strixhavenblock beyond knowing that it's themed around colleges of magic in-universe. I've mostly been doing the quick play games to fulfill the daily tasks. I've mostly been using the preconstructed decks that Arenaprovides, since the deck I built (a White/Black heavy LifeGain deck with a mild vampire theme) has cycled out of legality for quick play (and presumably Standard as well). This has sort of done what Wizards of the Coast wanted it to do and got me re-interested in purchasing cardboard crack.

Though not from newer sets. I'm trawling through TCGPlayer to buy older singles so I can collect as many Ajani Goldmane (who isn't even in Strixhaven) related cards as possible, as well as the Firesong and Sunspeaker card that I intend to build a Commander deck around to play at my Friendly Local Gaming Store once everyone is fully vaccinated and their system cleared (which is the 25th for me, but will obviously be later for many).

As for sports games, my main indulgences were back in the 16-bit era where my machine of choice was the Commodore Amiga 500, and I was still in the UK.

To that end, the sports games I played the most of were two fantastic soccer games: Kick Off 2, and Sensible World of Soccer. Sensible in particular got used for multiple marathon weekend tournaments with my school mates. I'd also say Speedball 2, but I'm not sure that technically counts as a sports game.

When I graduated to a PC, my big sports games were the Championship Manager series (now Football Manager) where I played just about every iteration from 1995 to 2004, though again, I'm not sure if it counts.

I do like playing Madden occasionally, but I think the last version I owned had Shaun Alexander on the cover, so it's been a while.

They also have volleyball, dodgeball, and hockey.  I think I would rank them Dodgeball > Hockey > Soccer > Volleyball.

The same characters are in River City Ransom and Technos Samurai which are also both great.

You have to go back to the Game Boy Color for the best of the Mario Golf and Mario Tennis games. The career modes for those were so satisfying, even though they were pretty much carbon copies of each other.

The best Madden was the last PS2 version with Shawn Alexander on the cover. Playing the career mode there actually felt like you had control over the player's movement, as a WR you could actually run hook routes properly, and the "realism" of not being able to call plays. Defense actually felt good too, now it just feels like skating around when you move.

For modern games it's hard to beat The Show. I have the 2019 version because I don't find the need to upgrade every year, so I don't know how different years stack up, but I do like the abilities that they included in the Road to the Show (career mode), even though some of them are incredibly strong, such as the 5 perfect pitches, or the slow mo batter power. My only gripe is that as a pitcher you are limited in what you can choose for your 4th and 5th pitches based on what the other pitchers on the staff have.

Super Dodge ball was awesome. What's not to like about traveling the world murdering your opponents. And then the end match, a face off with a with ghosts from a past team. Where you just kill them again.

I haven't really had much time to play this week, so I've been going with quick and easy Donut County. I plucked Battlefield V off of gamepass last night and suspect that my time this weekend will be doesn't there.

As far as sports games, the only one could ever get in to was Ice Hockey on the NES. Sports games and I just don't get along. I've tried to play them, but I just never have any fun.

Path of exiles since the latest league reset, Disgaea as always, Terraria, and Pokemon Diamond. I've posted before about buying up all the DS Pokemon games, then I went ahead and bought all of the 3ds Pokemon games as well. (I know I could download them, I have a hacked 3ds, I just wanted physical copies of these). So now I have a stack of like ~16 Pokemon games, And that's just the mainline games. They made a bunch of Tactics games and Roguelikes etc with Pokemon characters that I only own some of. It's satisfying in a way though. On a side note, don't buy any of this kind of thing from Amazon. They say there normal copies, but it's some BS "World" copy from Saudi Arabia+UAE and is worthless, no matter what they have pictured.

This week I've been (re)playing Dusk, and a side scrolling shoot em up/platformer called Huntdown.  It's got a Super Nintendo art style, and a Blade Runner cyberpunk setting.  It's fun, but the end stage bosses are really spongy.

I'm continuing my trip through Trails of Cold Steel.  I'm most of the way through CS3 now, so I'm making good headway.  I'd also like to get the new Resident Evil, but I'm going to try and hold off for now until I finish CS4, and maybe polish off a bit more of my backlog.

Subnautica: Below Zero finally got its full release yesterday too, so I really want to go ahead and dive into that now that it's completed.  From what I played in Early Access, it's not as good as the main game was, but it'll definitely do for an expandalone.

As for sports games...  Does Blood Bowl count?  If so, that's my vote.  If not, and that's understandable, I have to go with some of the THPS games.  Underground was my introduction to the series, and it's probably my favorite overall, but everything from the original up through American Wasteland is filled with excellent goofy, arcadey, punk-rocking soundtrackey fun.

Been playing some Fallot 76, messing around with the additional camp and getting prepped for the next update.  Really want to try out a bloodied build but not really having any luck getting decent weapon drops or randoms from the purveyor.  Interested to see what the legendary weapon crafting update is going to be like

Also started Red Dead 2.  Bought it some time ago but just kind of stopped playing it pretty early on because life got in the way.  That game is amazing and i cant wait to get back out there tonight.

Best sports game? NCAA bball and football games for the 360 era.  Those were great and i still play NCAA 14 football every once in a while.

LucklessWonder: Also, now that it's available as a phone app as well as a PC game, I've been dipping my toes back into Magic: The Gathering - Arena:

Found it in the App Store, and that's how it's been for me lately on the iPad. It's less aggravating than the Pokemon TCG Online (mainly because sometimes I get the feeling that Pokemon TCGO gets rigged against me - seriously, six bad coin flips in a row!?), and Magic brings back some of the better memories of grad school. I'm still F2P and probably grinding my way to get booster packs, but I was always coffee-shop-level casual anyway.

Someday I'll build a deck for Brawl or Commander (still have a couple of paper Commander decks - not premade, but cobbled together with love and maybe a little bit of sheer hatred in the case of my mill deck), but the Arena pre-mades (both the mono- and dual-colored decks) really suit my casual approach. At the rate this is going, I won't finish Horizon: Zero Dawn until October.

/as far as sports: FIFA 14
//if auto racing counts, Gran Turismo 6
///again, super casual - I have automatic transmission and all driving aids

Still working through Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA. My playtime last week was limited by my SO's cousin staying, which kept the gaming television occupied more often than usual (and I am too lazy to get the Switch off of the dock) so I also resumed an old Fallout 4 game that I had started years ago. I ran through some miscellaneous quests, also completed the quest to get the artillery working at The Castle again and then I discovered that I had a mod that gave me some really nice powered doors that were much better than the old "wooden wall with flimsy-looking metal shutter" doors that I had been using in my walled settlements.

So I went from this

Fark user imageView Full Size

To this

Fark user imageView Full Size

Fark user imageView Full Size

The look more secure, they feel more secure and Brahmin no longer get stuck on them, which is a nice bonus.

They have proved a bit annoying to swap in, though. While they are the same size as the old powered doors and they theoretically have the same snap points, a lot of my existing architecture gets in the way of an initial fit, so I end up having to move a bunch of the concrete pillars and flooring out of the way to set the wall in place, then move everything else back in.

During my travels Starlight Drive-In had an attack warning. I normally ignore them and let the settlements handle it on their own but I was headed back in that direction anyway so I stopped by. When I got there the settlement siren was already blaring (I have sirens next to guard posts so that guards can hit them), meaning that the doors were locked -- I wired up my security doors so that turning on the siren cuts off access to them. I was prepared to make a stand against whoever was coming but the numerous turrets atop the settlement wall fired first and pretty much obliterated every Rust Devil before I even saw them. Then the guard turned off the siren and all was well.

I love seeing my efforts actually prove useful.

Last night was City of Heroes night but it was nothing eventful. I just took some friends through old badge missions that we had missed to add to our collection.

Favorite sports game? I am not a sports person, really. Maybe Mike Tyson's Punch-Out?

Haven't had much time to play anything lately. Currently trudging through Returnal between updates (which erase progression because Sony). But I'm itching to get back to various randomizers for Super Metroid; season 3 is well underway on Speed Gaming and I hope to be good enough to compete next year. Branching route rando (entire map, every door is shuffled along with all items) is kicking my butt enough that I'll probably have to resort to a notebook before long.

Best sports game? NHLPA '93 (only played the Genesis version) was a favorite of mine even if the passing game was broken. NFL 2K1 (Dreamcast) was good, too. I also have a morbid interest in Race Drivin' (SNES and Genesis), a game that despite its name was not really a racing title and ran at a blistering 4 frames per second (not a typo, four); that was slow enough that you could crash into obstacles between refresh more often than not so it looked to the player like they crashed into nothing. Good times.

RanHakubi: I plucked Battlefield V off of gamepass last night and suspect that my time this weekend will be doesn't there.

I liked Battlefield V.  Still play it every once in a while but the player count had dropped pretty low on PS4.  That may have changed since it was the free game for this month.  The game modes are a blast and it is seems to be even more team focused than previous entries.  Good way to lose track of a weekend.

Taking a break from Monster Hunter: Rise until the next update, have final form weapons and armor sets for every element and status for light bow gun, insect glaive, and switch axe along with custom layered armor load outs to go with each and palico squads close enough to meta that chasing down more is more trouble than it's worth.

Started on the current Diablo 3 season last night,
I like the new mercenary gear system. Should be a lot of fun to play with.
Also been getting back into Slay the Spire for a little more laid back gaming.

There is only Darkest Dungeon. That's all I played this past week. I have a dozen or so level 6 characters and finally cleared out all the veteran level bosses. Time to finally get around to the champion level quests. Every now and then the "wolves at the door" event happens and I chuck some hapless low level "hero" into the dungeon by himself to get slaughtered so that the quest goes away. Good times.

I'm still partway through Final Fantasy XV. I guess I'll continue the bro-oad* trip when my obsession with Darkest Dungeon fades a bit.

* I really want a portmanteau of "bro" and "road" to work, but it comes out as "broad", which won't get pronounced with a long 'o'. Damn it!

Hardline I liked for one reason, the game mode where vehicles were flags. In Battlefield, I always played an 'assault' class, and love blowing up vehicles, so this game mode was everything I loved.

BF1 was staggeringly good. Everyone gives it a lot of hate, but it was one of the most balanced competitive shooters I have ever played gameplay wise (team wise, not so much). I played it pretty religiously for awhile, and got pretty good at it.

Also, BF has the best melee kill system. Period. Full stop.

In practice, though, there was no way to skip the CPU vs CPU games. You'd have to let your NES on to play itself, which was already bad enough, but the CPU teams were so evenly matched that games would pretty much always drag on for an hour and a half, into the 23rd inning with a score of 0-0. And you'd need to do that dozens of times... screw that!
