After so many tries, have they considered GOG, Epic, or self-publishing?  I get that Steam is a huge market, but at some point, you're throwing good money after bad here.

No porn. Porn is bad. Only murder please.

It looks like Steam's main issue is using likenesses of real people even with consent and payment. I kinda get that. Allowing likenesses of real people in games is an enormous legal can of worms. However, they did sell Cyberpunk iirc and that had Keanu Reeves and nudity equivalent the tamest version that this developer submitted.

In closing, they can call Steam hypocrites all they want with almost no fear of slander or libel. Also, Steam can tell them to take a hike for almost any reason they want because they are a private company.

2021-05-12 6:49:40 PM
More recently, Valve once again altered that language to blanket ban "sexually explicit images of real people."

Seems pretty clear to me.

is the steam policy hypocritical as hell?  yes

does steam absolutely sell porn games?  yes

is it the right of private companies to make their own stupid policies and choose not to take money?  yes

what is your best counter to that?  publicly shaming them.
oh, hi media article.

I remember getting a knock on my profile FROM Steam for being pissed I was getting dating VR/porn games advertised to me. What the hell is happening, because they're all about the virtual farking.

Checked out the Holodexxx website to see what all the fuss was about. It's a sea of uncanny valley. The 3D still models are pretty good, but the second movement is involved it gets awkward. I think it's the faces. Seeing them dance around yet keep the same static face (or jilted facial movements) is creepy.

Got a Quest 2 for Christmas and it's a lot of fun. I've thought about what porn would look like on there, but since friends and family always want to try it out/play it, I don't want porn being anywhere near that thing.

It's funny they mention Cyberpunk. Just a few weeks ago, the wife happened to walk in during one of their unskippable POV graphic sex scenes and she gave me an obvious look of shame, mainly because she thought I was just casually watching CGI porn on the TV. Once she saw Keanu she knew it was Cyberpunk, but I'll never forget that seeming look of disappointment.

I've long held that Steam is unhealthy for PC gaming. I love GoG and only wish it are the dominant player, but it's tiny and has its own rules issues (e.g. It won't allow a game that is also a mobile title, for some reason). Steam contributes to a monoculture that generates and tolerates a lot of crap, and renders Valve as the arbiter of what PC gaming looks like for everything but the huge companies that can afford to run their own storefront.

I think a title like the one described could be positive and valuable, and I think that title should be available for people to buy. It's not like Steam doesn't already sell adult titles or offer age restricted content.

Hilariously, since Valve is one of a small number of companies selling VR hardware, they're actively hurting their own bottom line; porn is a natural application for VR.

This is laughable. Steam has so much porn,

dodgy and racist titles on it's platform.

Isn't this the same company that has House Party, a game that's literally figuring out ways to have sex with every woman in the game (and at least one of the guys)?

It's elsewhere on other publishes, but none that would have the same visibility as Steam.

Self publish.  Studios have been selling porn games for decades doing that.

The counter to your argument is what I said upthread. They are worried about likenesses of irl people. As an example.

Let's say I make a sex game using nude photos of an ex. I tell Steam that I have releases and even provide "digital paperwork" of consent. It is then up to Steam to either track down the ex to confirm consent, or assume I am legit. Assuming I am legit leaves them open to some rather lucrative lawsuits and tracking down the ex isn't worth their time or money.

Also adult content producers already have mechanisms for identity verification, the 2257 documents they have to keep on file  with a responsible party they list in the production credits.

They should work with PornHub for distribution.

Then they can put all the naughty bits back in the game.

But other live action games that are just a porno movie have been on Steam for years. And an animated version that sounds a lot like the game in the article.

Steam has become a cult. They have assimilated the vast majority of gamers. So many say they will never buy anything outside of Steam. They bash all other sites. Kinda like Gamergate again. That is why the company wants to get on Steam. Outside of Steam, only a very few will ever know of their game.

Good riddance. I understand there's major pressure in the West to keep things safe and sterile since people are convinced fantasy and real life is the same thing, but for fark's sake this sounds like the most boring thing imaginable. I got adopted by a strip club some years ago and my closest friends are or were sex workers to some or other degree. There's no glamor or fantasy in it for me but tons and tons of guys still indulge in the fantasy that attractive 20something women want to spend any amount of time with them for some reason other than the money in their pocket.

Probably more people want that than to be a level 17 Pork Knight or whatever.

Speaking of Gamergate, there is an unfortunately named digital game vendor called Gamersgate. Established by Paradox entertainment back in 2006, had nothing to do with the misogynistic debacle, but I still hope they rebrand themselves at some point.

I wouldn't call it a cult really since people aren't wrong about the bad things about Steam but some big selling points it has with people including me is:

* Native Linux client and game support.
* Proton providing Windows gaming support under Linux for most titles out of the box with simple install.
* Proton providing Windows game support for things not directly tied to Steam install.

That goes a lot farther then most other stores out there and isn't cheap to setup and maintain.

They sell "games" from that "pick up artist" dude. They're basically instructions on how to demean women until they agree to have sex with you. They're just a step away from telling you how to put roofies in a girl's drink.

There is absolutely a spot to point out Steam has a fuzzy definition of porn. Using an obvious porn game is not the way to do so.
