If your feeling of self-worth is at all related to whether or not the alien clones on the cartoon space wizard show are within a tv display setting of your (or anyone's) skin tone, then please volunteer to be processed as meat for starving children.

I know that's a long shot, but it can't hurt for me to ask.

Mugato: It's a farking cartoon. dipshiat.

While this doesn't seem like the sort of thing that reaches the level of outrage, it is an interesting phenomenon. As soon as side characters take a more central role, animators seem to lighten their skin. It's the same animation studio right? They should still have the original color pallet. Someone somewhere is making a conscious decision to whiten up animated characters. Considering that something like 1 in 5 people on this planet do not have pasty white skin, someone was bound to notice and not be thrilled about it.

We saw this with Rebels Ahsoka, too. #unwhitewashtbb, I'm tired

I'm no Star Wars super fan, but knew she is an orange alien lady with tentacle-like hair - how could they have whitewashed her?

So I googled it and people are unhappy that her orange-ness is slightly different from before. I more noticed that her tentacle-hair was different and comes down on her forehead, but maybe that is normal Star Wars stuff.

Can I just be angry that they went with Generic Action Hero Trope Team for the new series? On top of it, we don't need yet another look at the time between Revenge of the Sith and New Hope.

Can we please get something Star Wars from Disney that isn't a prequel, thinly veiled reboot, or reveal of what happened between the movies.

There's also the issue that human beings don't have a solid and consistent skin tone through out their lives.  If the dude was living in a cave he *should* be paler than if living under the bare sun/s.

That might be interesting. The average viewer is probably going to need something significant to tie the stories together; like featuring one of the established characters somehow. It could technically be considered a prequel, though.

You can't have clones voiced by a different person unless that person does a perfect impression of said person's voice. To prove me wrong, you need to show me cloned people with wildly different voices.

some people are also biatching about the characters eye color... the character was introduced in Clone Wars years before Disney even aquired the franchise, let alone option Rogue One and cast Forrest Whittaker.  and since then they've bounced back and forth on the eye color depending on when in the timeline he appears.

so far as the voice actors...they get replaced all the time. Lama Su isn't voiced by Anthony Phelan in the cartoons like he was in Ep2.

some people seriously need a hobby...a different hobby.

You sound white

2021-05-12 2:50:19 PM
Uhm, the actor that played Jango could easily be called white. He is of Maori, Scottish, and Irish descent. He has as much claim to being 'white' as he has of New Zealand native (south pacific islander?). Using white voice actors is no less accurate to the original actor as using 100% south pacific islanders.

I had another thought. Check out Gov Tarkin - the only reference to a known lily-white actor. His skin tone in Bad Batch is distinctly darker. Essentially almost everyone falls within three shades of brown - light brown (Omega), medium brown (clones, Rex and most of 99), and dark brown (Saw). The only 'white' character is Echo, and he is robotic.

The animators are Asian (Chinese I think). Maybe this is just slanting pigmentation of the entire cast to Asian brown?

I would also point out that these troops don't get a lot of time in the sun. They are either in space stations, space ships, or wearing their helmets and armor for almost all of their time on the surface. They 'should' be pale because they don't get a ton of sun.

maybe...but nobody cared...nor should they.

I am not some "woke, Gen-Z snowflake". I saw Star Wars in '77 and knew Darth Vader was evil for blowing up a planet, not for being a black guy.  In the same vein, the heroes Obi-won and Yoda had different skin tones and neither one mattered.  However, I don't want to see a white Yoda or a green Obi-won.

I appreciate this article because I'm a big fan of "Clone Wars" and mostly missed what they were pointing out in "The Bad Batch".  They are right.  There is no reasonable reason to change the color palette on an established character, especially when the characters were modeled after real life people. And its a conscious choice - someone had to manually go in and change the color palette since its the same studio animating the same characters.  This isn't even an instance of switching Darrens on Bewitched - its straight up racist.  When I did see Omega was a little white girl, I thought it was because she was a clone of someone else, maybe Obi-won.  However, she has the face of her Maori brothers.  It was wrong when the made OJ blacker for the cover of a magazine and its wrong to make a hero whiter just because you feel like it.

Changing someone's race as a marketing ploy is just wrong.  Its also bad business.

Side note - I have no problems with Dee Bradley Owens playing the voice of the clones since he's been that character for years.  Most of the movie actors didn't want to touch the TV show and he's REALLY good at imitations.  They could have done a better job when originally casting to be more diverse but I think the job of the voice actor is to sound the part, not look it.  Its the animators job to copy the model's physical characteristics.

Leia gave Tarkin a fake planet where the rebel base was, he believed her and blew up Alderran anyway. Vader had nothing to do with it.

No one changed the race of any of these entirely fictional, completely digital characters as a "marketing ploy"
and just because they are reusing digital assets from previous productions doesn't mean they don't completely start up the series bible (including color palettes, etc) from the start for a new series. the tools they are using to animated the BadBatch are NOT the same exact tools they used even 2 years ago when they were working on the final season of clone wars. Software and Hardware are upgraded all the time. processes and techniques evolve constantly.

and those aren't "MAORI" they are Fictional Clones whose designs are stylized to resemble someone who is.

Frankly I think its more racist to declare that ALL Maori  people have a single skin tone and that skin tone is "Dark" or "darker" than you'd like it to be in a cartoon.

I wanna say "Lighten Up Francis" but you'd probably take it the wrong way.

2021-05-13 12:10:33 PM
side note: anyone recall why people of Maori descent were cast in the first place?  because the prequels were largely film in Sydney Austrailia.
Just like how most of the Imperials in the OT are British actors...because they were filmed in the U.K...not because Lucas was trying to make a point about the ethnic backgrounds of a a group of characters.
