Damn, between this and farking Duran Duran being 40 as well, I'm officially older than old. Saw Bob a bunch of times and while I think a few of his Island records are well overrated (everything after 75/76 except Survival), his charisma wasn't.

I can't wait for an entire thread of people who listened to Legend, and state how much they love reggae.
I enjoy his greatest hits album, but I don't listen to any other reggae. Even his son's music is unlistenable to me.

I mean, if you only have one Marley album it should be Live! (emphatically not Babylon By Bus) and it's not remotely close.

I have to admit that I'm not generally a reggae fan, but I do love Bob Marley. Such an oddly specific reaction to that genre.

i'll admit that every reggae song, to me, is just a slightly different version of any other\every other reggae song.  there is a reason it is the music of stoners; doesn't take much focus to listen to or play. not a bad thing it just gets boring, to me, by the end of the third song.

I feel the same way about the genre. There's maybe four or five songs that I can maybe separate from the rest but basically it feels like one continuing song.
But hey, more power to those who like it.

Much better than Legends. Provides a nice tour through his career starting with his early days in Ska and ending with the very last song he performed live before his death (Redemption Song),

It's not a full retrospective but it's comprehensive enough to provide a fairly extensive picture of his career beyond Legend which is just a greatest hits album.

That is a great 4-disc set. Heck, disc 3 is better than legends as it covers most of the same songs with better (and live) versions. It is a great collection as a whole.

This Bob Marley doc was a good watch.

farking nailed it.  Bob Marley and UB40, the only "reggae" anyone outside of Jamaica has ever listened to sober.  I've legitimately listened to more reggaeton than reggae.  Reggae is like jazz or whatever the fark Phish plays.  Just not my cup of tea.  I suspect if I played an instrument I'd be able to appreciate it more, but to my untrained ear it's just repeating the same chords over and over.

i listened to it. nothing about that set changes my opinion about anything i wrote. there is a guy with a shaker and hitting a mounted tambourine with his hand on the down beat.  i'm pretty certain that is the definition of a job you do while stoned.

i already said i don't like reggae.  it isn't because i haven't been exposed to enough reggae; it is because i have. but that shouldn't make you butthurt. you keep on keeping on with your 3 cords, 2 drum rhythms and 0 volume changes.

i could use some help with this though.  if you did shoot the sheriff why not also shoot the deputy?   for that matter why do you think saying "i shot a guy" makes compelling argument for "i didn't shoot that other, lower ranking guy, who is basically the same as the guy i shot"?

After he died, the wailers continued on and put out a few albums with the vocalist of Flower Travellin' Band. Criminally underrated guy. In case you can't tell from the powerhouse performance below, he did pretty damn good job filling in those rather big shoes.

Let me guess, you've also made the "joke" "Rap? More like Crap? Amiright?" more than once. Also, if you listened to the lyrics, he shot the sheriff because the sheriff had a personal vendetta against the guy, and the sheriff was looking to shoot him in cold blood as he was leaving town one day. So, he swears it was self defense. My guess is they can't pin the shooting of the sheriff on the guy because of the previously known vendetta, so they're trying to pin the murder of an unrelated deputy on him.

Nope. been a hip-hop fan since Run DMC. in fact the few bits of that set i could understand were "NPR" and what sounds like some lifted rap lyrics, though it's hard for me to be sure.

Also, if you listened to the lyrics, he shot the sheriff because the sheriff had a personal vendetta against the guy, .....My guess is they can't pin the shooting of the sheriff on the guy because of the previously known vendetta, so they're trying to pin the murder of an unrelated deputy on him.

Well it was a joke but since everything is super important i'll play along.  *let me clear my throat*

I tried to listen to the lyrics, i really did, but i fell asleep part way through. that constant, unchanging. monotonous song is more powerful than a xany and an Old English 40. Apparently it doesn't matter though because even a big fan like you doesn't know for sure why they are accusing him of shooting the deputy. also if they can't pin the sheriff's death on the him why admit to it? if he was leaving town why did he stop? how did the deputy catch up with him?

In Nov 1979 a buddy of mine was home from RMC for a visit.  He had a date for the Marley concert but the date backed out at the last minute so he asked me if I wanted to go.  I wasn't really a Marley or Reggae fan at the time I was more of a Prog Rock guy but I said sure, why not.

It was farking amazing.  I think I got high from the second had smoke ( the cop's attitude in the arena was "Let's pretend I didn't see you with that").  It was almost a religious experience.

I went out the next day and bought my first Marley albums (Exodus and Survival)

This was the set list:

Positive Vibration
Wake Up and Live
Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)
Concrete Jungle
I Shot the Sheriff
Ambush in the Night
Running Away
Crazy Baldhead
The Heathen
War
No More Trouble
No Woman, No Cry
Africa Unite
Exodus
Jamming
Get Up, Stand Up
Is This Love

For a middle-class white boy from suburban Ottawa it was a life changing experience.

I'm surprised at the amount of reggae haters here. Y'all don't even like The Harder They Come? That was a huge gateway record for folks.Normally I don't recommend expanded reissues, but the 2 disc version has some great extra stuff. And if you like that more produced 70s Bob sound you can't really go wrong with Black Uhuru. There are hundreds of great 70s roots releases once you dig a little. I never really followed reggae into the 90s and on though.

Incidentally, i see Sirius XM got rid of their reggae channel, and now just call it the Bob Marley channel.
Its good, except when they devote half the lineup to his brood of marginally talented grandchildren.
