He can't be cruel enough to the hired help?

He makes a lot of impulsive decisions that he will regret later.
He is mentally ill.
Film at 11:00, Ric Romero reporting, from the headquarters of the Wellduh Institute.

You do realize "his" decisions go through the board, yeah?

Been watching this guy's China channel for a while (detailing what it's like living in China).

It is an interesting but Farked up place.  I would be hesitant to do business there.

Why not?  In 5 or so years, you, too, may be able to own your very own Chinese-made Telstla.

I'm getting one the second it's available where I live.

Tesla is JUST NOW waking up to the fact that it's a hell of a lot easier to put money into China than it is to get it back out again.  Getting any back out at all can be tricky at the best of times.

Urbanization is not going well for the CCP.  Educated people in the city suddenly start getting ideas, and we know how dangerous those are.  So the CCP will chuck your ass out into the countryside to be a dirt farmer if you misbehave badly enough.  Hell, they'll re-locate your whole damn tribe to parts elsewhere at the slightest hint of trouble.

This is not a winning long term strategy, now that the cities are all interconnected, and the urban population outnumbers the rural folk.

Also, I know this doesn't have anything to do with the thread, but I wonder where that guy is who had a $3M or so portfolio that was mostly Tesla and like one hyper-growth fund that also held Tesla. They're getting crushed right now and may keep fumbling for a while. This is looking like another round of price discovery like the one we saw in November. More tech and growth rolling over.

It is the largest market in the world, after all.

Apparently this is the first time Tesla's brakes have worked in China.

In another life, I did some amount of legal work for foreign clients (usually Americans) who invested in China.

Very easy to get in (well pre-2010).  To divest out?  Oh my the stories I have.  But just one for now - You have to get various permissions from various Chinese govt ministries to divest out of the country... the biggest problem is probably tax.  You think you've been in compliance the past few years, but now you want to leave, the tax collector will figure out some amount you haven't paid (or just make it up). You will not be allowed to leave the country without resolving the bill. I've heard stories of the local police detaining the foreigner, or posting an officer outside the home to prevent him from leaving.

The bill is often quite high.  A solution which is in violation of US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (so I have no involvement or knowledge of my clients doing this) is basically offering to pay the local tax collector directly a percentage of the bill.  If you don't get the hint, the tax collector will often kindly just outright ask for the bribe. Being a tax collecter is (was?) a lucrative job position in the PRC.

It looks like it should be easy.  In reality, the only worse place to sink your cash is Brazil, IMOHO.

Cody's last showdy tears Musk the f*ck down. Half of this stuff I didn't know about. The dude is a monster.

I do like that his episode specifically avoids focusing on his social-media antics and really delves into the major, fundamental problems with many of his projects. But honestly, the union-busting and harassing of whistleblowers (and suing one for 160 million goddamned dollars) was definitely the line for me. The dude is a privileged, misanthropic choad.
