WHAT??? Good Girls got cancelled?

Oh, phew...

Can anyone ELI5 why everyone seemingly turned against the Golden Globes over the past week?

(Or has Golden Globe hate been around and I just never paid attention?)

I don't know too much about TV but what movies were released this year? King Kong vs Godzilla and Wonder Woman (which pretty much got panned). Why bother.

Supposedly the hate has been around a while.  But apparently it rushed recently because Tom Cruise jumped on board and literally gave back his golden globes as a sign of solidarity.

I don't watch the golden globes (they're essentially half the 2nd rate emmys and half the 2nd rate oscars combined into one show, so I don't a point to them) so I cannot stress enough about how much I don't care about the show nor the faux outrage.  But I figured I'd answer the question.  Hope that helps!

"News of the World" is pretty good.
"Vast of Night" was really good.
"The Dig" was fantastic.
"I'm Thinking of Ending Things" was arthouse crap.
"WW84" was awful in so many dimensions we can't cover it in a one liner.
"The Old Guard" was dumb and not in the "fun dumb" way.
"Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run" was funny.  Keanu Reeves makes it.
"Bill and Ted Face the Music" was a great surprise and well worth the 90 minutes to watch it.

Two older films I found that were both fantastic.

"Black '47"  Old school revenge during the Irish Famin.
"''71"  British trooper gets lost in Belfast in '71.  Holy shiat harrowing thiller.

There ya' go.

Hollywood has never liked the Golden Globes, and it's not an award that anyone important in Hollywood actually cares about. The glitz and glamour and feigned excitement around the Golden Globes has always been to make the Hollywood Foreign Press feel and look important, so that the HFP will keep publishing Hollywood news and marketing back in their various foreign markets. As studios have expanded their foreign marketing operations, though, and as more and more of the foreign public has turned to social media for entertainment news, the value of the HFP has dropped and with it so has Hollywood interest in the Golden Globes.

I'll admit that I didn't see all those movies but even if all that is true, it was not a good year.

There is a movie with Christopher Walken who is fighting some sort of legal injustice. It seems like he could have been played by Julia Roberts and looks horrible but Christina Ricci is in it and I'm glad to see her get work.

This is not recent development.  I doubt this was the true motivation behind dumping this awards show.  I'm sure NBC is using its selective morality as cover for the tanking market share of the Golden Globes. Who wants to broadcast an awards ceremony that almost no one watches?

I think they could get better ratings with reruns of Frasier

There has always been a few nominees that look like they bribed their way in (Madonna, Pia Zadora), and last year it was revealed the voting members got an all expenses trip to Paris to visit the set of Emily in Paris and suddenly it's nominated.

Also, every black person who has applied to be a voting member has been denied and the former President recently said some questionable things related to race. He also was accused of basically trying to finger Brendan Fraser without his consent. (He claimed it was a joke). They kicked him out finally, but not until last month when their reputation was heading south.

This too. I know diversity/moral outrage are the main story, but Awards ceremonies are cratering in ratings so this gives them an easy out.

Those are just the one's I've seen.   It has been a bad couple of years, generally, IMO.  I'm tired of splody superheroes and 3D nonsense.

Basically, I am waiting for Dune.

Duly noted.  I'll put them on my list.

I did see GvK, and liked it because absurdity is it's own amusement.

One more I watched last night that made me laugh.  "Love and Monsters"  is a poor man's Zombieland.   I lolled through it.

It is really damn good.   It helps to have a bit of an understanding of the players during that time,  UVF, Provisional IRA, Royal Constabulary, and especially British MRF,  but it's an excellent film even if you don't get that fully.   The early parts of the film are completely believable.    It has easily the best "this is how riots start" scene I have ever witnessed, and regular UK troops are portrayed in what I think is a pretty fair manner.  Young soldiers stuck in a shiat situation.   Same as it ever was.

I don't think the list is public, although if you dig around enough you may find one.

Names I've seen on the list in the news include:

Noel de Souza from India
Husam Asi
Lisa Lu
Munawar Hosain
Mirai Konishi

Not sure that all those are correct and current. But I did see a list from 2019 that seems to have decent Asian and Middle Eastern representation.
