Oh, and stop calling it "smart technology" you aren't fooling anyone. You bought millions in tech, thinking you would save thousands on payroll, and are now liable in the 10 digit range.  Avarice is not a cunning plan.

Bullshiat. Futures are not inventory. There is no demand for speculatively gambling the future other than what you are conjuring out of thin air.  Not everything needs to be monetized.

I suppose it could be worse if a fleet of self driving tanker trucks filled with gasoline started crashing into critical infrastructure due to some hack.

Maybe we shouldn't allow access to critical systems to the internet? I mean nuclear reactors have this figured out. Nothing goes in or comes out of the reactor control rooms that doesn't happen on site. All internet connected devices are kept physically outside the reactor.

But we might have to pay someone to push a button ever now and then so we won't do that.
This nation's hubris is going to be our downfall and we will deserve it.

RedComrade: Maybe we shouldn't allow access to critical systems to the internet? I mean nuclear reactors have this figured out. Nothing goes in or comes out of the reactor control rooms that doesn't happen on site. All internet connected devices are kept physically outside the reactor.

Well in their defense, a nuclear reactor isn't 5,500 miles long.  It's not necessarily practical to keep all critical systems isolated from our world's primary communication network.  We definitely need to work at hardening our infrastructure against cyberattack, though.  Most of our technology was built with the assumption that both users and software are generally trustworthy, and security was added as an afterthought instead of a core design goal.

2021-05-10 1:21:29 AM
If some dark web goofballs can do it, the Russians definitely can do it. Why is all our critical infrastructure hooked up to the internet again?

NeoCortex42: Maybe not everything needs to be on the internet?

Any computer that controls physical machinery should not be on the internet.  This has been clear since Clifford Stoll mentioned that the university mainframe was being used to control high-energy particle beams used to treat cancer patients in his book The Cuckoo's Egg.

One of the benefits of taking all of the control computers off line will be that Microsoft cannot push out any *&^%$#@! updates.

Only 2 members of the House Subcommittee on Cybersecurity have a background in anything approaching security (Slotkin was a CIA analyst and Andrew Clyde was a naval commander).  None have any kind of technical background.

We need more tech savvy people in Congress who understand the issues on which they legislate (IP, cybersecurity etc)

I watched a docu on Andre The Giant this afternoon and, along with a case of beer was just the beginning of a good night for him, Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon described his farts. Deep seated low frequency rumblings were only the start of the description. It was pretty funny.
