What if the most of the surviving writing of Ur, ancient Egypt, the Maya and such were their crazies' carvings and scribblings, and the sane knowledge was the stuff that was lost to time and ignorants?

Sheeit, this means Q and vanifestos will be the stuff of 3121 archaeology, and the sum of our era in their eyes.

I'm glad they did. (And I'm glad the original is on archive.org upthread, with the blue grid graph paper background images and everything.)

Gene's mental illness is instructive of a point in Internet history when it was possible have gone stark raving mad, yet never be at significant risk of attracting a following.

Without the amplification of social networks, Time Cube was a curiosity that got passed around by bored office workers (and no doubt high schools) who could lazily scroll down the page, and just take in the weirdness. There was no way for someone suffering from a similar mental illness to declare "AHA! This guy knows the TRUTH!" and begin to recruit others to his cause. He was a kook, to be sure, but the 'net had seen many a kook come and go, and his brand of kookery was - at the time - unique.

So you could scroll for a bit and finally come up for air with "Whoa, so that's what it's like in the mind of a schizophrenic. The syntax is intact, but the meaning of the words - if the words even have meaning - are meanings completely orthogonal to the meanings the rest of us use in daily life." In his own way (and completely unintentionally), he gave a bunch of people on the internet not just a few amusing moments of "WTF AM I READING?" but a glimpse into what the experience of schizophrenia might be like, in a way that a medical textbook never could.

Medical textbooks typically include only a few paragraphs of the writings of the mentally ill, but this... you could just dive back in and keep scrolling. For hours. Forever scrolling through the wheels of derp and just marveling at the output of an entire human brain's neural network spinning its wheels and producing voluminous yet meaningless output, an overclocked CPU mining the intellectual equivalent of dogecoin as fast as neurologically possible.

And then come back up for air with your officemates - hearing about relatives with dementia who had the logorrea, but not the complete break with reality. Or your friend who knew someone heard about a sitter who helped calm down a psychonaut who took some cocktail of designer drugs and had a psychotic break and the sitter had to try and keep a lid on things until the drugs wore off. Or that time you heard an excerpt from one of Charlie Manson's audiotapes.

And now that you've all seen how deep the rabbit hole goes - stared into the abyss and giggled at the void - you've all got an improved understanding of what sorts of red flags to watch out for when you encounter some of the lighter forms of mental illness in the real world.

And then you go back to work, secure in the knowledge that Gene, despite his mental illness, had the same right to participate in the marketplace of ideas as we all did, and that if we all exercised our freedom of speech, rationality would ultimately win out over irrationality.

Okay, so about that last paragraph. It didn't quite work out that way.

/raises a toast to Gene Ray and the rest of the harmless net.kooks of the last generation before social media made kookery a growth industry.

Some of the most obvious things in the early decoding of ancient Egyptian history was the crazy.  The total removal of some names from the timeline stood out.  In many cases it was clear that a cartouche had been carved in a stone and later removed.
