Haven't tried it. Tapioca is one of those childhood things I abandoned long ago.

Tapioca pudding is gross. My last memory of it was me refusing to eat it in a German school during lunchtime,  being made to sit out of recess, and the school called my parents. (Seriously, who gives a fark if a kid passes on dessert?)

Tapioca in the boba of a boba tea is great. It is nothing like the previously mentioned pudding.

My grandfather is allergic to tapioca. We have avoided it as a result. I don't feel that I have missed out on anything.

Shortage of buboes? Isn't that a good thing for public health?

Isn't bubble tea like the ketchup or Starbucks of tea? Sugar makes it better?

Dunno not a tea drinker. More efficient ways to get caffeine

My friend had me try it.  They were raving about it.  Over sugared juice with weird ass bobas you had to suck up with an oversized straw.  I was not impressed.  I was nice and complimented the appearance even though I was sort of grossed out about it

Bubble tea is sugar/fruit powder water with tea flavoring. It's a pure sugar drink to begin with.

I used them this Halloween at "the big gay campground" for jello vodka shooters.

I served them in Petri Dishes with lime green jello, and dried fruit and pop rock garnish...on a ring of 'glow ring bracelets'.

Kinda like this.

The plastic cups, lids and straws are a farkin' ecological disaster, and the sugar is ridiculous.

I really don't understand the fascination with that drink. It's like a melted milkshake with gelatinous lumps in it, like slime mold cultures. I'll pass...

But for you desperate Canadians, I have a suggestion. Buy a milk shake, let it melt, then sip it in between licking a moose's balls. Hell, if you have a friend or co-worker handy you might not even need the moose! *shrug*

I can only look on bubble tea as a desert and not a drink. The tapioca balls resemble gummies more than anything and tend to absorb whatever flavor in which they're floating. I can't say it was horrible but it's not something I would get for refreshment.

/ Like said above kind of a weird lumpy tea milkshake but the flavor combination can be somewhat tasty if unusual.

I... meh, I gave up on bubble-tea decades ago. I love cassava in the form of yucca-frita, and even sometimes tapioca pudding, but not so much with the boba anymore.

now, at a decent tea-house (even a chain like Saints-Alp) - give me taro green milk tea, hot or cold, any damned day of the week. I know it's over-sugared, and I ent exactly like sugar, but still. that purple stuff is farking liquid-crack.

lol, nota-bene: the beloved Ye Zimei was once known as something like, 泡泡小姐阿姐 - bobo siu je ah je? or sometimes more simply, bobo-saang. ~ "ms. boobs"
so back in the day, we used to call the drink as, "bobo-cha" (videre licet: bewb-tea)

One of my good friends in high school was from HK.  It was entertaining to see a Chinese/Polynesian/White Hapa kid speaking German with a British accent.

I'm sure Ye Zimei would have been on his list of movie girlfriends.

This, from the 90s.

And they were just as gross as boba tea.

Well maybe I'm being harsh, but its either a beverage or a food, not both.

I feel like as time has gone on the sugar water factor had gotten a lot worse; or maybe some places skimp on their flavorings more.

Like some places at least kinda taste like fruit and the rest taste like powdered Kool Aid

it's been ages since I even had tea-house fare - there simply aren't any in ne phila, nor were there in cape cod. which I suppose is for the best, you're likely right about the sugar factor... even decades ago the green tea taro milk was already too sweet for me (but man! so good!) so these days... yikes (I'd bet)
