I don't understand why they still feel they need to be the party of Trump.  Seriously.  I don't know why they're still hanging onto that whole... thing.  Drop the dead weight and move on.

They're actually very easy to understand.

They demand power for themselves and will do literally anything to get it and keep it.

That includes pollution, guns, white supremacy, and authoritarianism or fascism.

Once you accept that they are corrupt and shameless all their actions make sense.

Just bring slavery back, and the GOP will settle right down.  What they want is to enslave humans.

White privilege is dying.  Trump is their leader because he's such an avowed racist, and racism is all that matters to them.  All their perceived political power stems from their ability to look down on other people.

They're pathetic.  They deserve pity.

He plans to meet Thursday with Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, a West Virginia Republican, and a selection of Republicans of her choosing to hear out a roughly $600 billion counterproposal to his infrastructure plan.

Guaranteed that any watered-down plan the cons might sell him will see them turning around and voting unanimously against it.

Because it's a winning strategy.

Trump's platform of white supremacy brought in more votes than any presidential candidate ever, except Biden in 2020. They want to assume that mantle and hope voter suppression and DFL laziness will ensure they win next time.

Trump's supporters are Frankenstein's monsters now, completely out of control and ready to wreak havoc on Republican primaries everywhere. There's no room for anyone who doesn't kiss Trump's ring. Trump supporters are devoted to Trump and Trump alone.

It's been a long time coming. In hindsight, it's a wonder that some of us ever took the GOP seriously when they dropped a napkin doodle about the optimal tax rate in front of us and said "if we cut revenue, it'll generate revenue!"

The two competing goals here are: "We want to do something good for this country" vs. "We want power".

The second one is simpler to understand and more catchy.

Because 80% of the party is now Trumpers. They want to keep power, and they need to suck up to his believers. Trump doesn't give a shiat about politics or his people. He is still scamming his people for money right now. The republicans can't move on from Trump, because those Trumpers will not vote. It takes a lonnnng way before you get to that jump to Reagan 84.

It was a winning strategy once, but it's unlikely to be a winning strategy again. Notably, it was a winning strategy against a political family who have run for president on four separate occasions between Reagan '84 & now but do not show up on that list once.

It's also likely that voters' feelings on Donnie will continue to sour as he acts more & more like a loser & tries to project power but fails to make any tangible accomplishments. He's likely to see indictments soon which will make it harder to sell himself as a winner when he's in court loudly declaring that he has no idea why his company makes any of the decisions he takes credit for.

Will that convince the "Donnie can grab my pussy" voters? No. Will it maybe convince 5% of the "Ehh, we had eight years of the other guy now we have to have eight years of a Republican" independent voter? Maybe. 5% of people turning against Donnie in 2020 would have flipped Florida, North Carolina, & Texas (well, 5.6%).

By all means, don't get complacent, but Donnie's 2016 strategy is not repeatable. If he or someone like him wants to win, that person will have to use a completely different strategy.

Because Trump is their champion of unabashed assholery.  He's said the quiet part out loud and made them less ashamed of being deplorable.

Asking MAGAts to give up Trump is like asking black people to give up MLK.  He's that important to them now.

Because Trump got them closest to the end game they've been trying to get to for 20 years. They took the memes and Internet Reddit/Twitter bot army and thought that meant everyone loved Trump. He got them 74 million votes.

If they abandon Trump, they abandon their Internet trolls and the young angry white voters they won over with their fascist rhetoric and if that happens they'll never win again.

Even Republicans don't understand the GOP.  That's why it's turned into the GQP.  Anyone can pretend the GOP is doing whatever they imagine it to be because it no longer takes principled policy stances.  It just opposes, opposes, opposes.  They've even voted against their own bills when Democrats are in favor of them.

I knew the Republican party had lost its mind when after years of pushing its Educational plan, Obama had the audacity to say he agreed with it and would help.  They immediately memory-holed the plan and went back to full-on attacks on education.

Because as much as Republicans decry "identity politics", that's their entire political view. They don't subscribe to a set of ideals, they subscribe to an identity, and Trump was the ultimate validation of that identity. He was their id personified, he reflected themselves back, and while you or I might have seen a hideous funhouse mirror, they just saw themselves, as they wished they were.

Also, I just wanted to note something: notice how I said "the overt racism"? From my experiences, most baby boomers are only clueless in their racism. You know: the sort to be like "how is that racist," when confronted with dog whistles or racist institutions that they grew up with.

The next generation of conservatives that are coming in are truly terrifying, because younger conservatives are mostly straight up Nazis that are taking advantage of the older generation's fear of cultural and demographic changes to mainstream some truly awful ideas.

I believe him but I also think he understands.
In other words, people sometimes say that they "don't understand" when intellectually they understand what's going on and how to handle it but emotionally they can't understand how someone holds those beliefs.
At least that's how I read it based on his actions since he was elected.
