Typically no. Catchers do but almost everyone else does not.

If the third baseman tags him again while he's rolling around in pain he's out, right?

Angel Hernandez would have called that two strikes

I know he was trying to avoid the line of the ball so he doesn't interfere, but it looks like Mookie is doing a "Look at my dick!" presentation as he runs back.

Any sane infielder should wear a cup.

I just showed the clip to my partner, and explained that pros stopped wearing them like 15-20 years ago because they inhibit mobility.

These are the risks they take.

Also, "ouch my balls", subby?

Foul ball wasn't it?

Correct.  Even if the tag was before Betts got back tot he base, it wouldn't have mattered.  Soon as the third baseman touched the ball while in foul territory, it is a foul ball and the play is dead.

Still preferable to the 'drilling for oil' technique, though.

Oops, I didn't fully pay attention to the method to which the ball made it to the balls.

Oh well.

Very few players wear them, much fewer than you would expect.

There are a bunch of articles out there that will tell you the same.

I was rooting for Berrettini but in a way Zverev deserves it more. He went through Nadal and Thiem to get there.

hopefully it's some consolation for Berrettini that he was the only player to take a set off the guy who dismissed the King God and Prince of Clay.

fatherhood-in-technicality-only seems to be good for Zverev. his kid was born during the 500 event he won in Acapulco, then he wins his second title of the year on Mother's Day.

The worst part is how you can instantly tell which catchers do and dont wear a cup

I always thought the cup was something for which the design could significantly be improved upon.

Here's your standard-issue cup, the same one I used when I played baseball 20 years ago.

Jokes about the size of one's junk aside, I never understood why the thing had to both go down so low and be so wide. On a good day, the thing chafed my thighs; on a bad one, it damn near inhibited my running, and I'd imagine I wasn't the only one. If I stuffed the thing as far as it would go in my supporter, which I never did, the jewels would have still been fully covered, but the point would have covered most of my taint, and no one's got a thigh gap that wide. Meanwhile, if I kept it riding high enough to not inhibit my thighs, which was next to impossible, the top of it was damn near my belt line.

In our age of molded plastics and computer textile design, can't that be something you make differently so that doesn't happen?

It was always a dilemma to me whether to wear one or not. On the one hand, I was slow enough without one. On the other, I also played second base on some really crappolo fields where the hops were anybody's guess. Part of me wanted to wear a batting helmet with a facemask, much less a cup.
