Very unfair to Neanderthals, who would never actually sign Mussolini. I mean, seriously?

Neanderthals:  No men can kill us.

Hyenas: We are no men.

I don't buy the explanation.  Unless Neanderthals were really quite fundamentally different from us.  If a pack of hyenas kill a couple of humans, we'd go out and hunt them down.

How would they have known that's what happened?

Why would hyenas need a den?

Well, one, given the danger I doubt it would be unlikely for people to go out alone, instead only in small groups.
Two, hunter-gatherers often have pretty damn good trackers, which could identify where the missing people went missing and what caused them to go missing and track them back to wherever they went.

We have evidence of prehistoric solo travel.

So many possibilities. We can't know exactly what happened, only that the bones show something certainly did.

Heck, maybe the hyenas were in fact hunted down later and only this site not found back then. Who knows

For the same reason they evolved to the present day hyenas that need a Parlor.

9 remains for period of ~40000 years, most dragged by hyenas. That's one victim per 7000-8000 years. Plenty of time to repopulate den even if every death was avenged. And that's assuming that they wanted to avenge or could avenge or there was someone to avenge

Could be suicide by hyena, burial by hyena, etc etc etc

Know how I know you've never killed a pack of hyenas with a pointy stick?

/I don't know that actually, it's just a pretty easy thing to assume.
//there are parts of the world today where people are routinely killed by animals, and you really don't want to fark around with a pack of large hungry dogs.

Neanderthals had much much lower population density than modern humans of the same period. And hyenas successfully compete with lions and tigers while hunting. No doubt Neanderthals were hunters of prey animals but of apex predators like hyenas?

We also don't know much about their concept of the world. We expect that they had a concept of an afterlife and hence religion of some kind, but the most likely is that it would have been animism of some kind and the hyenas that preyed on them might have been.protected by a taboo, mostly due to a pack of hyenas being farking dangerous and a low population people can't afford the possible casualties.
