Thanks to Sonya Blade, I always assumed ponytails was the standard unless you went short/buzz.

So women should just let their hair flow completely loose while working on machines and shiat? Or rock the Sinead look?

Excepted it to be about men wearing pony tails. Which also seems unproblematic.

I believe ponytails are actually about women pulling their hair back out of their face.

And, yes, they look cute as can be.

I'm curious as to why the women don't have to adhere to the same hair standards of the men. Then free flowing hair wouldn't even be an issue.

At the speed the military moves to an actual war zone, there is plenty of time to get a hair cut.  Also, not everyone sees action, there are a lot of support roles.  It seems a non-issue to me.

I have never really been a fan of different hair rules in the military depending on sex, I think the hair rules should depend on job type.  In the field, front line, short as possible; working with machines, short; office work, then length is irrelevant, just be neat.

Two things. 1: Few things are sexier than a girl jogging in short shorts while that ponytail bounces around. It ramps up my genetic response to find a healthy mate. No, I don't stalk joggers, I just admire them from afar. most of the girls I've been with don't wear sensible shoes and smell like pinot grigio and Marlboro Lights.

I've forgotten the second point I wanted to make. It's a FOX link so I probably was just gonna b*tch about FOX.

As far as haircuts go, if you have a long mane, it's a pretty neat way to keep it together so I'd say it's up to standards

People who can't let the past go.  Same people that can't accept "the gays" can get married, transsexuals and black people treated as humans, and the overall lives of non-straight, non-white, non-males improving ever so slightly towards equality.

If it's not a safety concern and provides a professional image, it's fine.  The military has bigger problems than ponytails.

/like finally allowing trimmed beards in garrison

It shouldn't be an issue for men or women unless in a specific situation where it matters, such as if working among machinery likely to catch loose hair.

Plenty of militaries allow women to have ponytails or braids. And at various points in history it was normal for men to have long hair tied back.

People opposed to this change would be the "all change is bad / if it was good enough in my day" people and/or the people that are still pissed women can be in the military.

Puglio: In other words, Fox believes our service members are incompetent and unprofessional.

Actually, admitting the gays would have DESTROYED our 1960-80's military superiority.

See, nukes are nice, but expensive and dirty. If either the USSR or the US had pulled the trigger on those, the entire world would have turned on the aggressor.

So the cold war was actually fought with the threat of the alleged  "Gay Bomb." It was a real bomb, although the results of exposure were never publicly disclosed.

Leadership in both the USSR and the US were crusty, misguided bigots. Not a shocker. They really thought the bomb would cause an oiled up orgy to break out on thr battlefield and were horrified by the potential backlash.

If they knew gays were just regular people, then even it worked the bomb wouldn't be a threat. The USSR woulda steamrolled us.

Apart from Korea and deployed locations, few soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines live under a constant CBRN posture.  Most stateside units don't even issue you the gear unless you're some type of quick response force.

I say this because if that's the reason I think I can shave in the time it takes to go pick up a mask from supply.

Probably as much because of history as anything else. When women were fist joining the military short hair would have been totally unacceptable. And while that has loosened over the years and changed what style was acceptable they wouldn't get rid of it.

As to a good reason women aren't required to have short hair, it doesn't matter for the vast majority of roles. Requiring short hair would just drive women out of the military and push excellent candidates away as many want to have long hair for various reasons. And there would be no real benefit.

Really, they should allow the men's hair standards to match the women's.

They make you shave in construction, too. A buddy of mine who needed work during the most severe time of the shutdown took a construction gig because it was all he could get. He had a beard he was quite proud of (it looked great) but, nope, it had to go for equipment reasons.

I've also been forced to shave but only for corporate policy reasons (fine dining). These are sorts of jobs you take because you need them at the time, not for life. So I knew it would grow back eventually.

And it did! During the worst of the pandemic when I was COMPLETELY unemployed, I just let that sh*t fly. While I normally trim it tightly, I no longer gave a damn bc I barely saw any other people. We're talking Duck Dynasty silliness here. Now that I'm allowed to ease back into the world, it's tight again.

I have been shaving about once a month since COVID. By that point the moustache is generally getting in the way and it starts getting too unruly and clumpy.

I prefer having a beard, and had a full one through high school until I started at McDonalds, but for a professional look I find shaving is just so much easier.
