Underrated Styx song? How is it possible to give Styx less praise than they deserve?

Styx is my Anti-Band. That said, they did have a couple hits and sold some records. Equinox was decent.

/trying to be nice.

Oh, I have a good memory involving a Styx song.  Saw my first laser light show at around 8-9 years old.  They played Come Sail Away....

Also ELPs "From the Beginning", and the William Tell Overture (of all things)......

Good times........

a remarkably high standard across the majority of its albums

Majority? Like many bands they had a run of a few good albums, around Equinox to Paradise Theatre, in the middle of an overly long career.

I'm not a big Styx fan by any means, but back in the day, I got a free ticket to the Paradise Theater show.  A buddy of mine got stood up by this woman he had the hots for, and said 'If you aren't doing anything, lets go check it out.' It wasn't completely free, i supplied most of the beer and green combustible matter.  It was a hell of a show though, and I thoroughly enjoyed the parts I remember.

Gosh, I really can't fault much of anything on this listicle save for the exclusion of the cheesy awesomeness of this:

I have paradise theater and pieces of eight on vinyl from when I got them back in the day.

What a great band.

Paradise Theater was one of the best albums of that era.  Late vinyl period.  The master was done specially, and made a beautiful refraction pattern under the light.

I can still hear that opening piano note.

I agree "Queen Of Spades" is seriously rocking, but the best song on Pieces is the title track, in full. Quite possibly best song of their career.

I remember a long time ago there was a letter to the editor in the National Lampoon magazine from Satan that went something like "I'll take responsibility for most contemporary music, but I had absolutely nothing to do with Kansas, Styx, or REO Speedwagon".

We need a Z'er (a millennial will do in a pinch) to list them from least to most woke.

It's only inevitable because they are so insanely terrible.

I'm with you on Oreo, but Kansas had some excellent moments on their 70's pre-christian albums.

We need a Boomer Music tab so I don't have to keep reading about Styx and Bob Segar. There's been new music since the 80s, Drew.

Not sure why we would need a tab for the music Boomer Esiason likes, but considering his age I'd assume he listened to Styx and Bob Seger.

Anyways, good album choice regarding Kansas. My personal favorite being:

A couple years ago I did an AirBnB out in the Poconos, and there was one CD in the house stereo, which was not capable of streaming, nor did I have a RCA adapter (which I used to always pack but wound up rarely needing).

That CD was Styx greatest hits, and it was farking awesome. Every song took me back to my pre pubescent childhood, south Florida rock radio blasting out of my friend's older brother's car while they drank beers and smoked weed as we played kickball on one of the last unpaved roads in our barrier island neighborhood.

By the end of the weekend in the Poconos, however, I was as tired of Styx as I remembered being back in the day.

Kilroy was Here makes a lot more sense, music wise, when you realize the album was done as a rock opera.
