Most of the funding for the development of these vaccines came from public funding (US in the case of Moderna, Germany for Pfizer).  To allow them to privatize the profits while socializing the cost would be absurd.

Thing is it's kind of irrelevant.  The equipment and materials to make these things isn't something you buy at Target.  The machines that encapsulate the mRNA into the lipids are custom made and Pfizer and Moderna are already buying as many as they can.  Even if you could there is so much localized knowledge that doesn't show up in patents you probably would fail making them.

Derek Lowe had a great comment once about trying to keep a specific vaccine cell culture growing.  Why it was happy if you stirred the vat but not if you shook it isn't the sort of thing that's really copyable because we have no idea, especially when a culture at a different site only works when you shake it.

Eh, suck it up.

My grandfather could have been very, very wealthy with a patent for a new steel manufacturing process that reduced the rate of defects significantly, but it was WW2 and the government simply took his IP and shared it with everyone because they needed tank and aircraft parts.

I hate when writers or speakers use "the Street" to refer to investors.

I didn't read this article but one I did read one which mentioned all that and said by the Administration supporting withdrawing patents that would put a fire under the pharmaceuticals ass.  Basically gives some leverage.  As I read it was India and Africa pushing for this and EU less so.

OTOH, he could have set up the process himself, not sharing the info with anyone, and let the Nazis win.  Thanks to your Grandpa for doing the right thing.

The development of the vaccine took only a few days and was not publicly funded. The clinical trials took about eight months, and the government made an up-front payment for the vaccines which was then used to pay for those trials.

There is no Pfizer vaccine. BioNTech, a German company, created the vaccine and signed a limited-time partnership with Pfizer to manage the clinical testing needed to bring it to market. It's no more a Pfizer-developed vaccine than it is a Fosun Pharma-developed vaccine.

Germany was never going to win WW2.
Its nice to think the Nazis were an unstoppable force but the whole 2 fronts, Russian weather and seemingly unlimited Russian Cannon Fodder Conscripts steam rolled the Germans.
Maybe if they didn't have to worry about the Western front and focus on just the Russians.
But even with the new steel production, we were going to win no matter what.

Late comment, but the above is mostly false.  The development of the *specific* mRNA COVID vaccines took only a couple of days.

The work needed to be able to do it in a couple of days took decades.  Some of this work was done privately- Moderna has been around for over a decade and lost billions in that time.  Some is public, and it's been done by universities, government labs, private companies and every other entity you can imagine.  A lot of it comes from basic research that nobody knew might be useful.  (Alpha-globin mRNA expression rates?  I'm sure that will be critical to saving the world some day said absolutely nobody working on it)

Saying any of these vaccines were made by public research or by private companies is wrong.  They were made by both
