Remind me of a milder form of Igor Bars.

That's pretty standard After Church Coffee Hour stuff right there.

It's the only part of my highly religious upbringing that I miss.

Ah rice crispies treats. Wrapped in cellophane, they were what the poors used to give out on Halloween. They went right into the trash next to the Necco Waffers, Tootsie Rolls, and those unlabeled orange and black caramel things.

Fairly standard fare at pot-lucks around here.  Especially ones where my wife is going and has been tasked with making dessert/cookie type of item.

now that's a weird and terrible story. the people where you lived gave out time consuming homemade treats because they were TOO POOR to buy a bag of mini candy bars, or jolly ranchers, or even dumdums?

why don't i believe you?

also, fun fact: pretty much every single american kid EVER harmed by halloween treats (in the entire history of trick-or-treating) was poisoned by someone in their own household, almost always a parent......

Believe what you want. I'll stick with my facebook friends and assume that kids are being given THC edibles by the thousands each year.

Those are delicious.

I might have to borrow this recipe next time the wife goes out of town - she gets a headache when she has butterscotch and also reacts badly to corn syrup so her versions just aren't right, and I'd nearly forgotten how they're supposed to be made.

"...and using a sheet of wax paper or plastic bags to protect your hands from the still-hot mixture, press it into an even layer."
No.  Use parchment paper unless you like melted wax in your treats.

Our family version had an extra layer of rice krispie treats on top, so that the chocolate was a rich vein in the center.  They were made to take over to the house of anyone recently bereaved, earning them the unfortunate name "devil cookies".

Sinfully good.
