MLB:  Hey, don't forget we can mismanage our sport JUST as much as the NHL!

I'm glad the Chi Sox hired him.   Why yes, I am a Tribe fan.

Neither did Joe Girardi a few days ago when he tried substituting a pitcher who didn't make it on the lineup card.

What special talent does a guy need to get hired for a job he doesn't understand?

Pretty soon players will be hitting off a tee.

To be fair to Tony, as soon as you think you know the rules, Calvin changes them.

In politics you just need votes.  In business it's who you know.  Since professional sports teams are also businesses, there's likely a little "fans will remember him" name recognition involved.

/ I intentionally didn't mention skill, smarts, or ability.

It's a stupid-ass rule.  I don't care if occasionally games go into multiple extra innings.  Or that not every pitcher is a good hitter.  Don't fark around with the rules of baseball.  One of the strengths of the game is that there's era-over-era consistency -- you can legitimately wonder how the 1947 St Louis Browns would do against the 1988 Baltimore Orioles since the rules and the game were essentially the same.  You can't do that in pro football because the damn rules change all the time.

In LaRussa's defense, he's an alcoholic septuagenarian who retired ten years ago, and the rule is new and stupid.

Is there a reason you would want to, though? Those were two putrid teams.  But to your larger point, yeah, Manfred needs to stop farking around with the rules.  Keep batters in the batter's box between pitches and that'll speed up the game plenty, if he's worried about pace of play.  Crack down on illegal substances to lower spin rate, and that'll work towards ending three-true-outcome baseball.

Real Baseball Men like LaRussa care about the unwritten rules...and that's all that matters.

And how many commenters have a team that's tied for 1st today?

Difficulty: as a Sox fan even I think this was a stupid hire.

A three way tie in the AL central. Let's not go celebrating just yet.

A lot of the rule changes in recent years (mostly to "speed up the game"-most of which don't actually do this in the real world) have been dumb.  I don't mind the three batter minimum or the mount visit maximum.  But the auto intentional walk and this extra inning rule are two that are horrible.  I can see the need for the "you can't block the plate" for safety reasons, but if they want to have it they have to actually enforce the bit where the catcher can't then, um, block the plate, which they don't (see yesterday's Dodger game for an example).

I'll bet he got Chicago sluggers hooked up with a local PED guy though.

I'm aware. Still excited about this group. Robert's injury and Larussa's um, Larussaness notwithstanding.

I have no farking clue what Reinsdorf was thinking. Or ever has. Letting Krause blow up the Bulls. Letting Williams run Guillen off.

Oh, I'm saying that as a fan of the AL central bottom feeders.

Reading this very poorly written article I still can't tell if it made any difference in the outcome of the game.

I dislike LaRussa as much as anyone else does and ordinarily would gladly join in and dogpile on him for doing stupid shiat, but in this case I can't bring myself to criticize anyone for not knowing anything about this stupid-ass Little League style "extra innings start with a runner on second" rule. Stupid rule is stupid.

Speaking of one of LaRussa's former players, the Angels just DFA'd Pujols.

What the entire fark?

They still have to pay him his entire salary.  He wasn't setting the world on fire (batting .198), but still.

I mean, his WAR is negative this year, which means he's literally worse than any replacement-level player.  So if they're trying to win, they can just pay him to go away and find a AAA guy who sucks less on a league-minimum deal.  I don't know anything about their farm system, so no idea if he's blocking some up-and-coming guy, but emptying a roster spot that actively hurts the team isn't the worst idea in the world.
