I remember watching the news coverage of it while I was in college in NH.  It was kind of surreal seeing that thing that had been there for literally ages just gone like that.

18 years that are gone forever and we'll never have again.

It is sad. At least the old man in Shenandoah. He is laying back, so he will most likely last a while. It is so beautiful there. We try to go at least once a year.

It's been nearly 11 years since we lost the mountain man that truly mattered...

You know if they stop doing basic maintenance on stone mountain, eventually plants will start growing along the cracks and edges, and those faces will come tumbling down on their own.  Especially with as much rain as Georgia gets.

All right, he wasn't so old at the time, but he sure is now.

He's forever commemorated on our state quarter because there's literally nothing else interesting enough about NH to put on it.

Rather coincidently, an early website I used to peruse also died 18 years ago (although by some miracle it's still there, frozen in time): The Brunching Shuttlecocks.  They did a review of the state quarters as they came out.  NH's got the lowest given grade: D

'Enshrined on this disturbing piece of hard currency is "The Old Man of the Mountain," a monument which for all I know may be awe-inspiring in real life, but which on the back of a quarter looks like lung disease. Although, really, even if it did look like an old man, that's only on the novelty gourd level of impressive sights.'  Ouch.

Last time I was there was in the mid-80s. Got to see the Old Man and much more. The White Mountains make it a beautiful state if nothing else.

See, that one always kind of impressed me. A system failure on the Segway, however he didn't faceplant. Good reflexes.
