Smoking? How about cocktail dabbing, or at least cocktail edibles? If you pull up with a jar full of cherries, people will just think "Damn that guy likes cherries" and not even realize you're getting very modestly buzzed from the vodka those cherries have been soaking in.

And a plastic Halloween face mask.  Nothing quite as invigorating as picking blobs of molten plastic from charred flesh and burnt hair.

It's pretty common in upscale bars.  It adds a bit of smoky flavor.  I don't think it's worth it, but I feel the same way about oversized ice cubes and the citrus zests.  To each his or her own.

I find it a little strange that smoke flavor is so popular. But I dunno, Scotch is insanely popular and has been around for centuries, so maybe it's not so strange. Based on Instagram though, it does feel a little like an affectation of younger bartenders. Too many gadgets for what should be simple cocktails.

Big blocks of clear ice is great though and it's easily made with an igloo cooler and some space in the freezer.

Lighting the zest oil is totally for show for sure.  If you really want that don't set it on fire and vaporize it.  Just twist in and then toss it in or rub on the rim (that's what she said).

Smoke flavor has been popular since we started cooking food, so over two million years ago.

It's probably 60% "It looks cool" and 40% flavor.

I make the clear ice block/cubes using a the Rubbermaid "Roughneck" tote (smallest one...3-gallon) and that works well.  I've seen the igloo method and that seems to work pretty good.

I like all of those things. However, smoking cocktails and large cubes are definitely not necessary. On the other hand, citrus garnishes are absolutely important and have a major impact on many cocktails.

I do the same. Actually just made several batches this past week so that I'm stocked for the foreseeable future. I like how slowly dense ice melts. Keeps the drink from getting over diluted.

I used to make green dragon fairly often.

It. Didnt taste great. But everclear never tastes all that great. It's not something for mixing or sipping. You pour out a couple ounces into a glass and suck it back hard and fast and chase the hell out of it with something strong like coffee or cola.

I dont get smoked cocktails. But then again I dont get most cocktails in general. Maybe because I'm poor. I tend not to like anything that's all frilly or more fancy than it needs to be. It all feels too elaborate and makes me feel uncomfortable.

Just give me a mickey of gin and a swizzle straw thank you.

Vodka-Spiked Watermelon Recipe (thespruceeats.com)

We never did the watermelon things, but vodka and everclear "sangrias" (usually called Hunch Punch) were huge in the 90s in college. For about $100, you could get 50 people shiatfaced drinking from a big cooler full of fruit punch. It was pretty amazing.

My wife got me a cookbook for my smoker, and it included recipes for smoked drinks and desserts, like a smoked blood and sand (one of my favorite cocktails) and smoked ice cream.

I can safely say, that after doing the prep, getting the smoker to a sustained temperature and cooking for 6-12 hours, depending on the meat, there's no farking shot that I'm going to put a cocktail or ice cream in the smoker.

The most adventurous I got was a hay smoked burger, which was delicious but I felt like an asshole for being so bougie with burgers.

a 'hay' smoked burger? Like you used alfalfa and timothy to smoke a burger? That sounds both interesting and absolutely awful. i have smelled a fair amount of burning hay in my life and while its not an unpleasant smell it doesn't seem 'food' related. Its almost pot like in its smell. Alfalfa is incredibly rich and pungent and sweet.

I am. Super curious. Might try it.

What i really wanted to do was make a joke about how i tried smoking a cocktail but i could never get it to stay in the paper long enough to roll it.

It's very brief, and I used a flakes from a bale that my wife's uncle gave us. I couldn't tell you for the life of me what it was, but it was typical hay. I basically just threw a flake on the coals and let it smoke the burgers for like five minutes, then threw the burgers on my gas grill. Regular smoking won't seal the exterior of the burger to retain moisture, so it'd get super dry if you tried to cook it on the smoker.

Really not worth the effort to do it for just burgers, but I had already done ribs earlier and still had a decent temperature going.

I literally heard of this for the first time yesterday.
