I'll cave to a conspiracy for the sake of discussion. But this learning gap is creating a dumbed down workforce companies like Amazon are looking for. Smart enough to do their job, too dumb to organize and revolt.

You think American students weren't dumb enough before and they had to fix it?

Smart enough to do their job

The mere existence of remedial English classes at American universities (let alone their popularity) makes me think they have already fallen below this point.

too dumb to organize and revolt.

I question the premise that public school education leads to revolution, or indeed to any kind of thought other than what the ruling party wishes to instill. "Salute the flag. Listen to instructions. Aspire to what we tell you to aspire. Hate what we tell you to hate."

I posted that thinking I was being too negative, giving too little credit to the younger generations like the middle aged, half-asleep, overly-caffeinated person I am. Then here you come with a supporting statement that was both unexpected and truly depressing.

Start year round school for al students and they can graduate earlier so we can start putting them to work.  A fifteen year old can flip a burger or serve in the infantry, right?

Summer school should be sold to the parents as a way to get the kids out of the house.  Eons ago, we were allowed to use summer school to graduate high school early.  It's how I was enrolling in college at 16.

Nah, gotta be 17 to join the military, and 18 to serve in combat these days.
Damn bleeding hearts & sissies telling the military what to do.

Going to push back on this one a little.
I think the average human wants the most comfort and reward for the least effort and the big companies are just putting that to work for themselves.  It isn't evil schemers reshaping the population, it is cynical opportunists putting how it be to work.

Ended up in summer school once in high school.

In college I sometimes didn't take a full load of classes, because of my work schedule. I used summer school to catch up on credits. I found the summer classes were better then  the fall/spring semesters as there were less people taking them.
