Stop bringing Red Dawn into this. It's a great movie. The subtext is highlighted and bolded, and the effects could, at best, be charitably called earnest, but it takes a point of view and doesn't compromise it for a second.

It's not the movie's fault that SOME of its fans (and its creators) don't realize it's a fantasy.

They must be kicking themselves. The countless fortunes they wastes in the Cold War, building nukes and bombers and missiles and shiat, when they never needed any of it.
The only weapon they have ever needed against America is America's so-called "conservatives".
They have always been the rot in America's core.
Racist, violent, intolerant religious fanatics and xenophobes.
The proper term for them is "fascist", and they bring down every nation they successfully infest.

Their error was supporting left wing sympathisers and useful idiots in the 60s and 70s. They should have been recruiting the Lee Harvey Oswalds rather than the "peace and love" college crowd. They appear to have learned from that mistake.

I disagree.  I think Red Dawn takes its "insights" and conveys them with the subtlety of a hammer.  All the tropes are there.  "Protect our daughters", "The Turncoat in our ranks", "the grizzled veteran", and on and on.

And then Superfly has the UN mandated list of gun owners on file!

I don't think they could have spread their propaganda message back then, they needed the unfiltered, fast spreading effects of social media to make it work.

Back then, things got vetted before going on air or to print, even FAUX has it's limits, not so much with Twitter and Facebook, and all it takes is ReTweet for it to spread.

At this point, Russia's best assets to project power aren't their troops, but their Troll Farms combined with RT. They've fomented discord in Europe, helped derail the UK and the US with a Crazy Train, and are pumping fuel into racist and xenophobic groups, if not helping their very foundation.

They know that they cannot compete militarily. Not with China. Not with the US. Not with Germany. Not with the UK. Certainly not with any of the NATO treaty nations. They have plenty of troops, but they've raided their own armories, sold off so much stuff, that their troops are ill-equipped to fight any sort of modern military. Which is why they pick the fights they do, because they are picking on the weak AND they work to divide them long before they move.

Russia has correctly identified the best way to bring nations down, and it's not by threat of military force, but erosion of leadership and an organized response. Turmoil and domestic unrest are a lot cheaper to invest in. They learned it by watching the US, and they just committed to it far more. It is opportunistic, and they'll take whatever tools present themselves, but let's not mistake that they declared a very asymmetric war with the US and Europe a while ago.

I mean the Director of National Intelligence report of 2017 was pretty clear that Russia openly used cyber warfare and information manipulation in order to disenfranchise around 80,000 voters, all that was necessary to swing the election. All this was done using social media via heavily farmed sock-puppet accounts targeting highly volatile swing areas of the nation.

The recently declassified DNI report of the 2020 foreign election threats stated they attempted the same thing with the same tactics.

Clinton was a shiatlib candidate but that doesn't change the fact that foreign powers did the same thing we've done to other nations.

What you're seeing is the natural progression of technology, and the failure of society and the law to catch up to it's spread and influence.

The closest thing we had to what is going on now during the cold war was pirate shortwave radio broadcasts, hijacked TV signals along national borders, and fraudulent communications. That the internet would become a primary medium of rapid and closed communication wasn't even fathomed at that time outside of science fiction.

A fun fact to note is that a lot of the major players in Qanon, pizzagate, and other right wing/neo-fascist scandals in the last ten years were heavily active during 4chan's pre purge years, and into the gamergate purge. In fact, some of them even started to gain notoriety in the gamergate era, and 4chan's purge pushed them further into a fascist echobox on 8kun - which was started to harbor people banned from 4chan for kiddie porn and ultranationalist views.

The QAnon losers were banned from 4chan for kiddie porn and child abuse imagery. It had nothing to do with politics. Nazis have always been and still are on 4chan.

Pizzagate was a test run for QAnon to see if something that ridiculous could gain traction. The earliest adopters of pizzagate were Michael Flynn and his son which brings in Russian ties to pizzagate too.

It is rather impressive. Probably more for the audacity than the difficulty. Turns out right wingers don't really care too much about the US, the Constitution, equality, freedom or justice.

Anyone ever read 'Behold a Pale Horse?'  Lots of it was wacky shiat, but IIRC, there was a section about fighting wars with information in the future.  I did not really get it until now.  Information does not have to be true, but it can tear a country to pieces.  As the stakes of traditional military conflict between advanced nations have become way too high, social media has become a battlefield where the weak can dominate the strong.  Brexit, the Catalonian independence movement(that's the one in Spain? It's farming early) Qanon, Trump, who knows where else.  People self segregate online, echo chambers that occur naturally can be weaponized.

Free discourse has become a weakness to exploit.  I'm not sure we have a workable defense. Cults flourish in the face of opposition. To the conspiracy theory wackos, being told something is false by some authority is a confirmation of belief.

Anyone is vulnerable, even people with healthy skepticism will tend to believe things that support their worldview.

The truth is that humans are not rational.  We operate off a mix of instinct, emotion, prejudice, greed and fear. I am honestly not feeling a lot of hope here.

LOL Duh.

This had Russian active measure written all over it in neon graffiti. It's CamAnal style manipulation, possibly spearheaded by Bannon at first with some Russian signal boost.

Then either the real Q quit after mid-term elections in 2018 or Ron Watkins of 8chan took over the account by force, both to promote his political agenda and to keep 8chan traffic flowing.  That's my theory anyway.

All these 76er idiots who think COVID is a scam don't realize their X-files cosplay game is the real hoax.
