Dexter's ending was a prime example of what happens when someone's ganja toking nephew gets control of something.

Probably the same guy who got control of Showtime's other main show at the time - Weeds.  Weeds was the show when the nephew got all kinds of wacky ideas and stupid jokes, then started toking on the couch and, in a lazy and uninspired stupor, created season 8 of Dexter.

/also, Hannah thread.  Holy hell was she lovely in Dexter.

The show always struck me as having dark undertones. Looking forward to seeing what a premium cable channel will do with it.

*Sigh*...remember how good the early seasons were?

There is an awful show currently working on a third season called "You"...I've been hate watching it with the Mrs.....imagine a dumber, less nuanced Dexter meets a Lifetime movie. The "twist" at the end of the second season leaves you grappling with the stupidity of it all. The massive coincidences that would have had to transpired, the god like knowledge of a character...so overwhelmingly awful.

The female lead in the second season is lovely.

The last three seasons of Dexter were so bad that I've never gone back to the first four.

"Giving the fans a more satisfactory conclusion to the story was one of the factors in bringing the series back..."

So basically they're Snyder-cutting it to placate the mob. This bodes ill.

That's what always baffles me, why do people let how bad a show ends ruin how good the rest of it was. Almost EVERY good show like this farking sucks by the end. BSG's first seasons were absolute miracles of storytelling, and it's ending was so farking stupid, still a great show. Nip/Tuck's first couple seasons, the 2000s - early 2010s were littered with em. Granted I'll probably never go back and watch most of these shows again, which has more to do with what was going on in my life when I they aired and I can't fully separate them mentally, I still look back on them fondly.

But this reboot idea for shows that didn't end well, farking bring it. This shiat isn't sacred, it's only sacred if it ended well, just give it another shot. Game of Thrones ending being disappointing? Just farking do it again and make it good. Star Wars sequels, no matter which side you were on with the Last Jedi, were disappointing. farking bring the actors back, hire better writers with an actual story plan and give it another go. Or just pretend they never happened and let Favreau and Filoni do whatever they want with the "Mandalorian/Rebels Universe" they've created without needing to plan around those movies down the line. If it sucked, fix it or ignore it.

/Never watched season 8

She was hotter than hell, sure, but she was pretty much the reason I didn't like season 8.  It wasn't as bad as I remember it on second watch, but seriously, everytime she shows up I wanted to throw something at the tv.

Probably just her character being irritating as hell.  Afterwards I watched Chuck and I liked her perfectly fine there.

/Only bad season was season 6 and only because you could see the twist coming from 10 miles away.  And Tom Hanks' kid is not good at acting.
//All the odd numbered seasons are the best.  So season 9 should be awesome.

Another show that should have ended in five seasons.

I think it should have just ended with the fourth, without changing a thing. It might have been one of the most intense seasons of TV that I've watched, plus that ending would have been perfect.

The fourth season was way too successful for them not to continue.

5 was a nice denouement that also pointed at the slide ahead.

The first four seasons are still amazing. I just don't feel compelled to go back and re-watch them.

Either that or end it with Dexter and Trinity killing each other once Dexter realizes he can never have a normal life.

The ending was great. He pays for his addiction by losing his wife to the trinity killer. Decides to concentrate on raising his kid and quit killing cold turkey. Nothing happens after that.

JFC, THIS....

As much as people hold up Season 8 as a way to destroy a successful series, dear God's the books were horrific after like the second one.

Also, I think the quality of the later half of the series was about as hit or miss as the first half.

Season 5: bad. Suffered from 'Well, where do we go now?'
Season 6: decent. Solid performances from the lead bad guys, slightly weak script. Solid ending
Season 7: uneven. Another case of the acting being far superior to the scripts. Too many season-long subplots.
Season 8: uneven. Again, weak script with too many subplots. Decent ideas, but lousy execution. Mainly/Rightfully reviled for landing flat on its face when failing to stick the landing.

Lithgow was season 4 right? That was the best season. The Jimmy Smits season 3 crap was terrible. Don't get me started on how bad season 5 was....

Unless you are trolling and I missed the joke.

One of the major problems of the show was, as it increasinngly it deviated from focusing on Dexter to focus on the lame subplots of other characters, it increasingly sucked.

Hey. I liked You. :)

The first season is far superior to the second, of course. The male lead is a stalker and psycho and I wanted him to fail, because he's an utter creep, but I also rooted for him in other ways, because he's charismatic, vunerlable, and likes to punish bad people. I've never experienced a character that makes me feel so polarized about them.

If you liked Victoria Pedretti (that female lead of season 2), check out The Haunting of Hill House. She's magnificent in it.

I felt the same for years, but last year I re-watched the first 5 seasons and it confirmed it's one of the best shows ever made. Just SO FREAKIN good. The score, the storylines, the cast - 10/10, as good as it gets.

It is well worth the trip as long as you avoid the final few seasons. They just lost their way.
