Yesterday, the Fark War Mongers were decrying this outrage declaring Iran had crossed a red line in attacking poor defenseless Israel and WWIII was surely imminent.

Today, we find out it's just a malfunctioning missile fired in to fend off an Israeli attack.

I'm very happy no one here is in charge of things.

Those are some OLD electronics, late 1960's level. I see some giant rectifiers, and look at that old style circuit board.

In fact, the missile - identified by an Israeli military spokesman as coming from a Cold War-era Soviet-made SA-5 Gammon long-range surface-to-air missile system - was one of several fired by Syrian government forces in response to Israeli strikes in that country, likely directed against an Iranian proxy target.

I'm confused. Syria retaliated against Israel by attacking Iran?

Yup, that's the point.  These things are ancient and apparently fairly useless most of the time.

If your job is to hang around an SA-5 missile system, it must kinda suck to launch it

Like, are they going to be paid for staring at the launch vehicle sans missile?

Possibly because Israel decides sometimes that shooting missiles at Syria--or anywhere else--substitutes for actual diplomacy with Iran\Syria\Pakistan\People They Don't Like This Week.

/Yes, yes, everyone started off hating them. Somehow, the proposed solution of 'try to control the region through terrorism' doesn't seem to be working, does it?

Digging the slotted screwdriver-ready panhead fastener.

Knowing the Soviets they were probably making this the exact same way right up to the end of the production run.

Israel responded to the errant missile by conducting further airstrikes in Syria. Targets comprised several air defense sites, including the one responsible for launching the SA-5.

As I called it, the Israelis being dicks again. And again... and again... and again...
At this point I hope they get stomped back to 1947 borders at minimum, but I doubt they don't even deserve that by the way they act.

Jesus, people... if your entire history is everyone else trying to be rid of you, don't you think you might just have a little to do with it?

It is very complicated.  Syria has an ongoing civil war and Assad invited in Russia and Iran to lend assistance.  Iranian forces in Syria often move equipment in, then ship it to other groups they support such as Hezbollah located in Lebanon.  Israel, who is hostile to Iran and Hezbollah, has been attacking Iranian forces and equipment in Syria (usually giving Russia a heads up to avoid hurting their forces).  Syria, as it is their right as a nation, often engages these Israeli strikes that are targeting Iran in Syria.

I cannot tell you who is on first though.

My second least favorite anti-semitic trope, not bad. Coincidentally I was just reading about the York anti-semitic massacre, where the city's entire Jewish community trapped in the Clifford Tower chose to commit suicide and not be slaughtered by a mob. Definitely their fault, those Christian blood libels.

Yes, Israel preventing advanced Iranian missiles from getting into the hands of Jihadist terrorist proxy groups of Iran, since no one else seems to bother or care, who use it to attack Israel is definitely a dickish move by Israel. if you're a Jihadist terrorist who wants to see Israel eradicated and Jews dead.

I used to laugh at these 3rd world countries with their antiquated weapons. Then I saw a documentary on US bombing in Iraq and they were pulling out good old dumb bombs left over from the Korean War, wire-brushing the rust off, and loading them on B-52s (also from the 50s).
