What are the odds that the mathematician you nominate would have a connection to Epstein? Show your work.

Didn't Epstein fund a good amount of scientific research?

Being "associated with" him isn't necessarily a sign of guilt or complicity.

That said, if this guy WAS guilty or complicit, fark him.

Don't worry about it, there really wasn't a lot in TFA to R.

Next.
I'm sure there are plenty of qualified science advisors out there that don't smell like someone's pedo.

I don't know.

At this point, I'd just say pick someone else.  You don't want a hint of malfeasance or wrongdoing with the advisors.  It just give the right-wingers and Qtards a talking point.

The director of the Broad Institute.

I can see why Jeffrey Epstein was meeting with him.

The point is, his nomination was HELD UP. They didn't hear about the allegations, then ram his nomination through anyway.

This.  Epstein was heavily into elbow-rubbing with elites in all fields especially the intelligentsia. He imagined himself among them.

Good luck finding powerful people in the 90s-2000s who WEREN'T ever in the same room as this douche.

Yeah; it's unfortunate for the scientists, it will be used by a lot of people to try and discredit them.

The White House has acknowledged Lander met with Epstein twice in 2012, including at what Lander said was an "informal sandwich lunch" at a Harvard colleague's office, but he denied any further relationship.

Informal sandwich lunch huh.

If they don't have a talking point based in fact they have no issue making one up. Quite skilled at it by this point actually.

In my 10 year background check the investigator asked for all the names I could remember at a house party 22 years ago where I got an MIP.

How the fark does an epstein connection slip past a real investigative team?

I'm going to give the Biden administration the benefit of the doubt on this one. Epstein clearly did no party wih egghead highbrow intellectuals, outside of the political elite. And Epstein, being filh rich, had to have his tenatacles in many, many charitable endowments where rich mofos and their families sat on boards of directors in order to move around family wealth. A mathemagician probably made his living off of endowments etc.

Jeffrey Epstein got away with it for several years because of two things.  First, and most obvious, he had a lot of rich powerful friends protecting him.  Second, it appears looking at his organization that he had a legitimate side, as all illegal operations do, where he was operating as a dating service for people who see themselves as exclusive, be they rich, academics, medical doctors, ext. to meet other people in their exclusive circles.  It was like he was running a Farmers Only, but for rich white assholes instead, with a side hustle in the human sex traffic game for clients that wanted a little of that too.

I don't think all those women with medical degrees and professorships , that he was hustling were accepting money on the nightstand, nor saw themselves as prostitutes.  Their dates on the other hand, and this is the sick thing, may have, on the other hand, known they were paying money to pay for a date with an attractive doctor with a reputation as a sure thing.

It's going to be tricky to separate out who were the scumbags wanting to go to pedo island to pick out a new sex slave, and the ones that just thought they were paying money to meet interesting people.

So in the Trump Administration you could BE the guy who literally let Jeff Epstein off the hook  by giving him and all his unnamed coconspirators  an illegal pass on everything he did and still get confirmed as Secretary of Labor, but if you MET with Epstein professionally, you can't be Biden's science adviser?

It's amusing that most of the people here seem so sure THEY don't know a kid toucher or rapist or never went to dinner with one, or lunch, or attended a gathering of any kind with a kid toucher or rapist in attendance. You probably do/have, you just don't know it.

A huge part of white male privilege is that not only do you not go to prison for shiat the rest of us would get time for, it doesn't even get to an investigation. It is quietly hushed up. The cops are never consulted.

My neighbour was arrested for child porn last October, I guess I'm lucky no one took a photo of us together with our kids. Interesting fact: he's still hiding out at his home where his teen daughter lives. I see him rarely but man does he look like shiat.

Also depends on what his day to day role would be. If it's communicating with the public: good pick. Otherwise, unless you have an asteroid or Gamma-Ray bursting problem, not so much.

On the one hand, I'm more than pleased to see Biden resurrecting the Office of Science and Technology after Trump flushed it.  Yes, let's run our policy through a bit of science review, as opposed to some guy telling us how much we'll make on the vig or how much it will hurt PoC.  And I know we're 3 months into his administration and the GQP can't even get a tan suit or condiment "controversy" going, but can we please put this dude in a room and really make him come clean.  D'oh!  are we not phrasing... Please make sure "informal sandwich lunch" is not a well-known euphemism in JeffreyEpsteinWorld and if not, farking hire the dude and defend his ass.

Same, mostly. I'm just saying, I've worked at __________ for over 20 years. A LOT of people have come and go in that time and I've had lunch with some of them (group lunches, mostly), some more than once. Christmas parties, other gatherings.

If I was nominated to head Biden's Kickin' Ass & Takin' Names Committee, somebody who wanted to go to the trouble could dig up some picture of me sitting across from or next to some dipshiat who got popped for kiddie porn or the like 10 years after he (it's almost always a he) left the company, but from what some smooth brains here are saying, I should be out of the running because I had lunch with him once. And had no other association with him.

The "let's not give Republicans a talking point" bullshiat is stupid. We don't need to give them anything at all. They make up shiat (like the many murders Hillary's supposedly committed that have somehow left no evidence whatsoever) when they don't have anything real. Most of their hysterical accusations are shiat they make up. I'm ALL out of farks to give about anything Republicans say. Ever. And everybody else should be, too.

I don't think Epstein was well known as a pedo back in the early 2010s. His name wasn't in the news and he spent lavishly in academic circles, so if he knocked on your office door, there may even be a university administration making the introduction.

Well, yeah, it's difficult. They don't usually advertise it. A guy I worked with years ago got sent away for ten years for downloading child pr0n in the early days of the internet. He farking did it everywhere - his home, at our office, at local libraries, in a local university computer lab. If it had an internet connection, he was hoovering up the CP. He finally got caught trying to trade pictures with an undercover FBI agent.

On the day he got arrested, the FBI stormed our farking office, made us all unplug our computers, and emptied the place out. If it had a hard drive then they took it with them. We eventually got the equipment back, but they were not nice. It was not a fun day. And even though none of us were officially suspects, the FBI didn't care. We spent weeks doing interviews with agents about him, about why we didn't pick up on it, or whatever else popped into their head.

And why didn't we pick up on it? Because this was before the days of monitoring traffic on a network. Webcams barely existed. We didn't have security in our office because it was a shiatty office. He would come in overnight, "collect" material, and leave. The librarians and university lab staff probably had to answer their own questions. He stored everything on Jazz drives - remember those? If you weren't following him around 24/7 he presented as a typical, mid-20's computer nerd.

So yeah, I can see how someone who needs money for research might not automatically assume the billionaire offering it had been convicted in a hush-hush unpublicized settlement in a different state, years earlier. It's not like I Google every single person I meet every day. And I know, I KNOW at some point someone is going to link me to that asshole even though this all happened 20 years ago and I'll get judged just the same as this professor. The 40 other people who worked with him probably feel the same way.

Child abusers and child pornagraphers do not tell you that's what they are. Hell, you may even know a few yourself, you just don't realize it.
