I've never watched Pink Flamingos 🤔

Not-so-CSB:

I work on Nob Hill in San Francisco, and while approaching the bus stop after work one day about 10 years ago, I saw an older-looking man standing there: corduroy pants, leather-elbow-patch blazer, button-down shirt, and...pencil-thin mustache clinging to upper lip? It took me a moment to recognize him as I approached (and stopped about 15 feet away), but it was none other than John Waters himself, waiting for the #1 bus on the corner of Sacramento Street. Evidently, he owns an apartment somewhere nearby.

The bus was about a block away, so I approached him, and our entire exchange went as follows:

"...Mr. Waters?"

"Yes?"

"Big fan!" Thumbs up.

"Thank you." Big smile.

We got on the bus, I stood near the back, he sat near the front. I waited the next fifteen minutes on the bus for someone else to recognize him. Nobody else did. He just looked like someone's grandpa riding the bus. I gave him one more smile and thumb up as I got off the bus, and haven't seen him since. I still work in the same place, and I check the bus stop every day as I leave work.

Someday, I'll say something else to John Waters. Maybe I'll eat poop in front of him. I don't know yet.

Wait, what were we talking about? The guy who made Johnny Depp famous?

Huh.  I just listened to his terrific interview with Marc Maron, that just came out today.

His shtick seems so tame now - but he was the sharp edge of the vulgar knife back in the day.
Happy B-day, Mr. Waters.

Yeah but with Waters there was always a certain level of satire or dark comedy.  These days it's just shock for the sake of it.

No plans to retire, eh?  Other than the fact that he hasn't made a movie in like 15 years.

/Granted, that's mostly because no one will fund his movies, but still.  He's in retirement, just... against his will.

Is subby talking about Andy Devine? Because the late Glenn Milstead went by the screen name of "Divine".

If you get the chance again, just engage him in conversation.  He's one of the most interesting people and a fantastic story teller.  If you haven't seen This Filthy World, a film adaptation of his stage show, I highly recommend it.

FARK!  That movie is now 15 years old.

That's been my rule since years ago when I first heard him say that. Now I think, what do people without books use to raise up their devices during Zoom calls?

His books on bad-taste culture are hilarious.  When I read "Crackpot", I literally laughed out loud.  He's a smart, clever guy, and always good for a quote.

I absolutely wanted to talk to him, but felt like his quiet bus ride was not the place to do it. Ah well, next time.

except of course that he's acted in 22 different things, released multiple books, produced more than a decade of musical festivals in that time frame. yup he's totally retired.

As well as a book a few years ago about hitchhiking across the country.  He mentioned that apartment in SF.

I saw it a few years ago for the first time at a midnight movie screening and ended up buying the DVD. I found it much better than it had any right to be.

Also the director's commentary is fun. Waters recognized in retrospect that the movie was doing punk, just before punk was a known subculture.

You are out of the loop. Until the pandemic struck, Waters has had a  second career performing one -man shows around the country. His Christmas show is not to be missed.

In an interview with Terry Gross, where they were discussing the re-release of "Pink Flamingos", John said something like "The best part of the re-release was that the motion picture rating board HAD to watch it again so they could give it a rating."

Terry:  "And it got NC_17"
John:  "Oh, of course."
