Now I want a GIF of Chris Hemsworth dressed as a Linesman and on skates holding out his hand, arm extended, and, suddenly catching the goalie stick of Henrik Lundqvist.

I wish my parents had named me Thor instead. Then I wouldn't have this problem.

Yeah, you'd have had a laundry list of other problems; though none of them as bad as the problem you got now, I guess...

Could be worse, you could be Matt Gertz.

Yeah, it really sucks when chosen your name eventually comes to conjure up images of something you absolutely are not and don't endorse.

In unrelated news, austerity is terrible fiscal and social policy.

If I were him I would say that I'd rather have been named Mike.

At first I thought "linesman" was a player position in hockey. Then I realized it's actually one of the officials. Then I wondered why he would happen to know the name of an NHL ref. Then I remembered he's in Minnesota, and they probably test for that stuff on the driver's exam.

I don't know any refs anymore but remember i did back when i could go to pens games frequently.

apparently there's either a dearth of nhl refs or certain guys just shine.

Probably the announcers name them periodically too. They have numbers on.

Oh, that is a really inconvenient coincidence.  I mean like...  That's like going though life with a name that was totally fine until someone else named Ted Bundy started killing women all over the country.  You'd be like, "GodDammit!!  What the actual hell?!"

This guy doesn't have it that bad.  He just needs to add to his business card, "Not THAT Eric C Nelson", and that's a great new slogan.

It would be great if our society could stop threatening and attacking defense attorneys in the first place, what with the right to counsel being one of the most fundamental and important constitutionally-dictated rights we have as Americans.

We're family-friends with a defense attorney who represented a very infamous, and widely despised, recentish defendant. They and their spouse eventually ended up moving several states over due to the severity of the harassment and threats they were receiving.

I don't get it, either. The money and experience they get from defending an obviously guilty scumbag allows them to defend obviously innocent victims adequately down the road. Give the guy an honest effort, pocket his money, have a drink and be happy that justice prevailed.

The simple fact is that if the jury let Chauvin off the fault would have been entirely with them.

Very true. I know several defense attorneys, and they generally are just trying to do their jobs like everyone else. Their position is required by the system. If we had a system where judges and prosecutors treated unrepresented defendants fairly, it would be different, but we don't.

Funny story. Round about 1993 I was arrested for DUI in Minnesota. Got hauled in to the hospital so they could draw blood to determine BAC. They asked me some questions and then said something like "you can consult with an attorney if you like." It was 3:30 AM. They handed me a phone book. I opened it up the yellow pages to the lawyer section. Picked one at random. I don't remember exactly how, but I think I left the hospital number on a pager or something and 2 minutes later the lawyer had me on the phone. That was Eric C. Nelson. I ended up hiring him to represent me. Didn't know so many years later he would be infamous.

So much this. Every defendant deserves a decent defense. We need to go towards making sure more poor people have access to proper resources not the other way...

The last name Nelson is a Norwegian, and Swedish last name. So, him being named Thor would make sense, and be not a crazy sounding name in the Minnesota/Wisconsin area.

Total sh*tass reporting in to pointlessly remind everyone that even pieces of ass sh*t like Chauvin deserve robust legal representation and his lawyer was duty bound to do his best at representing that sh*t ass piece of butt trash.

This has been pointless "mmm actually" opinion spewing for your pleasure. Enjoy the rest of your evening.

Have you ever been to *Minnesota*?
There are 7 people living there.
All of whom are named *Eric Nelson*.
Even the girl.
(She's very popular)

Back in the day I played Counter-strike with a guy nicknamed Thor.
Big blond Nordic dude.
Had been hit by lightning 3 times.
No one stood too close to him when it was rainy.

When I worked offshore on a Noggie boat we had two Norwegian crane operators: Thor and Roar.  Nobody names farkers like the Vikings do.

The way I see it is that nelson did a good job.  He gave chauvin the best defense that anyone could have.
So you KNOW chauvin had a fair trial.

That is what a defense attorney is supposed to do.

If he had given a shiatty defense there might have been a mistrial.   Or left it all wide open for appeals.

They're always announced before the game, before the teams take the ice. They also announce the timekeeper, the penalty timekeeper, and so on.

Clearly he is just doing PR.  If he really wanted a new name, he had two choices, Ole, or Sven.
