It's one stat.

1) Percentage of non-white voters in America > 0.0%

2021-04-21 8:45:04 PM
Republicans are about half of the electorate.

The electorate is about half of the people eligible to vote.

25% of the population are Republicans. Due to gerrymandering and the electoral college, it takes fewer than 18% of the adult voting population to elect a majority and rule the other 82% without their consent.

NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION is what I say to this.

Kill the filibuster and pass voting reform already, and this problem goes away. Along with any of the Republicans themselves.

I don't understand why this is difficult. The Democrats have nothing to lose and everything to gain. It's asinine.

Non-college educated whites dropped from 53.8% of the electorate in 2016 to 49.2% in 2020.

That is still a weirdly large number, especially considering some of the morons I met in college.

Oops, ong with *many of the Republicans themselves. It won't completely eradicate the party, but it would disempower them significantly.

"TargetSmart's chief executive, Tom Bonier, told me this means that non-college-educated Whites increased turnout over 2016, but just not as fast as other groups. In other words, the GOP is "running out" of non-college-educated Whites.
...
If Republicans cannot find enough non-college-educated Whites and, worse for them, cannot count on White evangelicals (more than 80 percent of whom voted for the MAGA party) to keep pace with the growth of nonreligious voters, their nativist party - driven by fears of an existential threat to White Christianity - will no longer be viable at the national level."

Summary: white supremacy and religious extremism are not viable long term platforms.  Everyone else is largely smart enough not to vote for that BS.  The GOP has painted itself into a corner nationally.  They can cater to the deplorables, or they can appeal to "everyone else" who might support the not-quite-as-insane proposals of the GOP, but they can't get both groups to turn out in big numbers at once.

That's when it was all flipped, mostly. GOP trying to get a reliable black vote from northern states, and peeling off Roosevelt Democrats.

Today Democrats want to keep their reliable black voters while peeling off Lincoln Project Republicans in the suburbs.

g.fro: Jim_Callahan: ...  Mandatory voting ...

"...universal vote by mail..."

Mandatory voting is a very obvious basic requirement of forcing political entities to actually tailor their policies in the interests of the population.

The fact that a party can win an election by "increasing turnout" instead of actually convincing the majority of voters that their position is superior is the proximate cause of almost literally every problem we have as a society, including the farking pandemic and police murdering innocent people in the streets without consequences.  Elections won by getting a minority of very stupid people super excited about a policy that's obviously completely farking moronic when presented to the average person are the equivalent of putting your gun to the forehead of democracy as a concept and unloading every round in the magazine, then reloading a few times to fill its twitching corpse with more lead after it's already down.

Voting being a thing that you only do if you feel "inspired" to do it doesn't cause democracy to fail on some airy conceptual level, it invalidates the concept itself on the level easily understood with high-school math.

If you don't want to vote for any of the available options then you can farking show up to the voting booth and fill in the "abstain" option for everything individually.

// We got an object lesson in this basic arithmetic problem in 2016 when literal fascists, who poll at only about 10% overall, got to take over the entire executive branch because of how farking excited and "engaged" people whose agenda is to commit genocide against everyone browner than them are about voting.

Forcing people to engage in political activity is unAmerican.

I think we should have a none-of-the-above option on ballots, which would also require a minimum vote threshold for victory.

There are many voting reforms we could easily implement if only there was the political will to do so. Mandatory voting would never pass a legal challenge without a constitutional amendment.

I think it's more self interest by the few holding it back. If the 'centrist' democrats vote for it they lose a lot of leverage if democrats don't need a super majority (eliminate the filibuster) and consistently have more than 50 senators (voting reform). In that scenario politics move to the left and the ones not interested in progress get ignored instead of being catered to.

Send everyone over the age of 18 a ballot. You can send it back blank if you want, postage is pre-paid. If you fail to do so, it's a $50 fine that will be added to your yearly tax filing. All fines will be reimbursed on your taxes if you send in a ballot for a later election.

Yeah, I knew someone would ask. I had a nice chart and now I can't find it.

There is this, but it does not say "death rate" just more cases.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/elanagross/2020/11/06/areas-worst-hit-by-covid-19-voted-for-trump---as-cases-hit-record-high/?sh=3b033570b551

and this..
https://www.statnews.com/2021/01/25/undercounting-covid-19-deaths-greatest-in-pro-trump-areas-analysis-shows/

and this from 5 days ago...
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/04/17/us/vaccine-hesitancy-politics.html

and this... Trump made best gains in counties with higher death rates.
https://khn.org/morning-breakout/trump-made-surprising-gains-in-counties-hit-hardest-by-covid/

Is COVID killing enough Trumpers preferentially to make a difference? I don't know, but old people are the most susceptible to succumbing.
