There was a white supremacist, science guy on Rachel Maddow who brought this up once, and she gave him the what for about it, but he was actually right. She has a funny hate bias against nuclear. It is pretty simple, small doses of radiation we expected, or assumed would be linear in its' harmful effects is not, so that up to a point on the graph of increasing exposure, radiation exposure is beneficial to a point, and then the effects become harmful. An effect of toxicity called hormesis.

If X-rays weren't good for you, doctors wouldn't prescribe them.

What are the miscarriage rates?  Maybe it's just survivor bias.

Yay!

I can get my fluoroscope out of my (lead-lined) basement!

They used to prescribe them to clear up acne. Worked too, I would imagine it also scrambled the girl's eggs.

Tell that to my dad's graduating class, who were almost all gone by the time they were 70. They're (or were) Down-Winders. Lots of glioblastomas. LOTS.

There were so many claims that the government had to streamline the process so people could get their $50,000 quickly, while they were still alive to spend it. My dad is still alive out of pure spite for humanity.

Well sure. Sunlight was good for you, until they decided we should all wear SPF 2000 and a lead suit.

If a bunch of people actually get cancer from radiation exposure, it was not a small, "good for you" dose.

Light isn't deadly, ionizing radiation.

The nuclear power lobby lies, their lies are public record, they just settle their lawsuits to prevent regulatory agencies from developing case law. Jesus fark, if you read basic legal texts about how to win jury trials, they are all about how the nuclear lobby's lawyers contrive victims as antagonists, and how to ignore scientific evidence so that juries discount obvious medical problems.

Mr. Hilton: What about our sales?

There's a nuclear power lobby? I didn't know, that if this existed, that it was powerful.

The best part of being a kid for me was looking out the front window of my house, waiting for the milkman to deliver the chocolate milk. lol

Recommend farkers read "Radon Girls" where, indeed, it was initially believed radon was good for human health until it was found it was bad, really really bad.  Not a book to read if you are already depressed or if things that are bad make you sad.  But it is an important book.

It's called 'hormesis'.

And details are critical.  Very small amounts of radiation may well be beneficial, but it doesn't take long for more to end up being a *lot* worse.

Yup.  I had a stack of them and loved them.  I liked that they emphasized intelligence and that he had to be careful to avoid hurting people.

"Ionizing" depends on what you're trying to ionize (chlorophyll for example), and certain wavelengths of ultraviolet light are quite effective at damaging DNA and killing cells.
