Fark has assured me our aircraft carriers can handle any kind of drone or drone swarm attack so I'm not worried.

Shouldn't we have shot it down?

Oh man can you imagine if a country endlessly flew drones over a country without their permission? What if those drones deployed ordnance that routinely killed civilians and that country was never held accountable for it. That'd be crazy!

Yes. But that would mean we spotted it. Doesn't look like it was spotted

you're assuming that this isn't just b-roll footage from top-gun with an edited date stamp that they got their hands on. it's not like Iran doesn't have history of putting out fake media.

I think the only clear solution is to build another dozen or so carriers. We can't allow our fleet to lose its superiority. Mitt Romney warned us about this back in the day. He warned us.

They also have been shown to have a pretty good drone capability. This is a clear "you guys aren't as safe as you think" message

A carrier swarm to counter the drone swarm.  MAD!

That's why we have the CIWS system, not to mention all of the electronic protection from AEGIS cruisers and other supplemental craft. If this is an Iranian camera drone, that is still 'alive' then it is likely that they just don't care. What are they going to learn? That an AC has planes and guns?

2021-04-21 1:36:19 PM
Lol. They wouldn't dare. Who do they think they are? Israel?

We might have spotted it and not wanted them to know we spotted it.

If it tried anything aggressive you can bet the CIWs would have blown it to tiny pieces, and then blown those pieces into even smaller pieces.

Is that footage dated 2016/06/05?

2021-04-21 1:38:34 PM
That could never happen in the US -- the "Revolutionary Guards."  In just one season it would change to the New Revolutioary Guards, then the New and Improved Revolutionary Guards, Brand New Formula Revolutionary Guards, etc. until one day, someone would figure out how blind we have been to the racism and cultural appropriation inherent in the naming convention.  That would be revolutionary.

2021-04-21 1:39:04 PM
It's probably old Chinese or Russian satellite footage. If it was a drone in 2021 it would be in perfect 1080p at that range.

2021-04-21 1:39:51 PM
They either saw it and decided it wasn't worth it to shoot down a drone with a $2 million ESSM or they didn't see it.

I'm assuming they didn't see it as it was the responsibility of the cruisers to defend the carrier from this kind of stuff. But, they could have also been running under extremely restrictive rules of engagement..

/or it's a faaaaake

Can an Estes model rocket with a 3rd generation iPhone taped to it really be considered a drone?

I wouldn't think so honestly. If its at sea, it's likely either neutral or iranian waters. Blowing up iranian property that isnt attacking you over anything but your own allied airspace sounds like a no-no.

Difficulty - not a lawyer, in the military, or a SME in global diplomacy.

It also could have been a message back. "We want you to see this. This isn't some Russian coal-burning barge, this is five hundred tons of fark-you-up, so don't start".

The proof that the drone wasn't considered a threat is the continued existence of the drone.

The chances it flew over an American carrier undetected are about zero.

The chances an American carrier can't splash anything Iran can get airborne are about zero.

IF that footage is from an actual drone flown over an American carrier I'd be surprised if fewer than 20 weapons systems were tracking it.

The chances that if Iran FsA it will FO are close to 100%.

Right wingers in Iran and Israel do not want the Iran deal to re-instated.  These provocations from both sides are just beginning.

There is no evidence that footage was shot by drone. The Iranians fly commercial over our fleets assets all the time and it takes f all to strap a camera to the bottom of one.

We need to have at least two aircraft carriers for every drone that Iran has so that they can't fly over them all at once.

Should have had any available personnel bring their cameras onto the flight deck and (try to) take pictures of the drone

I'm not even in the Navy and I know that carriers at sea running daily operations do not park all of their planes on the deck like that.

That's old press footage, Jesus.

Carriers beat out battle ships 80 years ago and nothing has changed since then. So relax.

This makes sense. And how come we aren't painting them blue? Come on guys, they're boats, they should blend in with the water.

So what?

In the USA, there is nowhere where surveillance is illegal. By law, Americans must accept being surveiled at all times, including in their own homes.

Why should the USA's people or possessions be free from surveillance in international waters?

True. Depends on how the Ayatollah wants to interpret things

I wonder if the guy at the controls of the suicide drone is supplied with a gun to shoot himself when mission is successful?

kyleaugustus: Is that footage dated 2016/06/05?

Yup.

I also find it odd that they airbrushed over any identification markings on the ships. The numbers are several stories tall, I was trying to figure out how I was missing them, and then I finally saw the noise where they should have been.

If you have read f*ing footage and you want some shock value, you don't leave watermarks from 5 years ago and air brush out anything that could corroborate your account.

"precise footage"

Um, have you seen the guys that race drones? That is precise footage.

This is more like a decent home movie made with impressively sourced materials despite embargoes.

/I wonder where the operator was for this

By now Reddit will have identified both the ships and the original source of the video from 5 years ago, and the name of the co-pilot in that chopper that has its rotor turning.

Even if that footage is legit they got about as much intel from it as they could have gotten from any American movie that features an aircraft carrier in it.
