There's a Culver's a couple miles from the house.  I've never had a compelling reason to stop and try it until now.

Sounds yummy.

First time my mom had cancer (3 time survivor), the only foods she could eat and not toss up were the custard from Culvers, macadamia nut cookies from Quizno's and the loaded grilled cheese from 5 guys

Culver's and Freddy's both popped up in town over the past year, and right about the same time. And doing the same thing. Trends are funny like that (remember the resurgence of self-serve frozen yogurt about 10 years ago?).

It's like a thinner, greasier Five Guys with more reasonable prices. Definitely a cut above the major chains, but just barely. Like "Whataburger...Plus"

5 years living in the Midwest and I never ate at Culver's.  The Butter Burger was intriguing, but never managed to get there.  Huh.

I've driven by them many times and  never stopped because they call their burgers "butter burgers" and I always thought that sounded gross. I may have to try them now.

We stumbled upon a Culvers on vacation in Florida a few years back. Now we plan our vacations around whether there's a Culvers in there area.

Ragin' Asian: Jolibee's and taco trucks should be in more people's lives.

I can't survive without my taco truck. New Orleans is the last city you'd associate with tacos, but during Katrina a lot of Latin folks settled here due to the easily available work. I have the luxury of living near one. It's like a 5 minute stroll, and a similar price to Taco Bell. Except these are serious tacos, and the Ecuadorians who run the truck are super friendly and quick.

As mentioned in other threads, I'm COVID-broke, but I gladly hand these folks some bucks for the best tacos I've had in this town. If I spent it at Taco Bell the money would disappear from my community.

Culver's is _____. I was woefully unimpressed by smashburger which sounds like what TFA compares it to. The Culver's burger is quite nice, and the rest of their menu is awesome.

And one little old school Dairy Queen in Livingston, MT is the only one to be put in the same league as the Portillo's burger.

This. There's a plethora of taco trucks in my neighborhood, but Jolliebees takes some effort to get to. Still worth it for the Chicken Joy.

Since Jolliebee's bought Coffee Bean, a lot of my local Coffee Bean locations have shut down (4 in my neighborhood alone!). At the very least they should convert them into Jolliebees goddamnit.

As for Culver's burgers: My college days consisted of me hanging out with friends at the In & Out in Culver City. Does that count?

So I only saw a mention of cod sammich, not wall-eye but NINEv2 has me convinced that I need to try it if my plane ever falls out of the sky while I travel coast to coast.

Personally, I think In & Out is as much hype as anything else, but I'm about 10x more likely to stop there in a pinch than McD or some such other nasti. I think the two things they have going for them is quality control with their simple menu, and the fact that they seem to care more about their employees (who then in turn give a little bit of a schitt too).

I worked at a "custom" burger place a lifetime ago, and it has forever ruined "fast food" for me. Probably a good thing though, and I make some seriously awesome Uberburgers™.

Dude just about any fish from Culvers is good, in sammich or plain supper form. You should be good with about anything. They even used to have a pot roast dinner but I think the plague killed that.

And yeah, In n Out is a lot of hype. That is one tasty burger, but not the second coming of jeebus like some people think. That would be Portillo's:)

Honest question, when you say portillos, are you talking about the portillos famous (to me at least) for their italian beef? I went to Chicago last june and portillos was literally my first stop before we even checked into the hotel, as recommended by a friend.

If their burgers are even remotely on the same level as their italian beef, I gotta go back to Chicago. Like tomorrow.

George Culver, the father of the owner of the chain and the person who started the family business in frozen custard and fast food, was a good friend of my uncle. He would spend weeks at a time on the farm during the summer playing with my uncle. This was a dairy farm so eggs and cream were plentiful even during the depression. Grandma made the best ice cream/frozen custard for the kids. We like to think she inspired Culvers.

My Mom (who also played with George Culver on the farm) had a fall, stroke, and was in hospice (95 years old and still living in our home caring for herself). She was limited in what she could eat but ice cream was OK. We fed her the institutional stuff they had there and one of the few clear sentences she said was "Not as good as Culvers" so we ran out and got a pint each of chocolate and vanilla custard. She enjoyed that and we needed to get one more pint which only had a serving taken out when she passed away. While we were waiting for the funeral home to transport her, we went and got the leftover custard and a few spoons and stood around her toasting her with Culver's custard.

Yes, I have a soft place in my heart for Culvers. Their fries aren't great but everything else is really tasty.

If I may?

You can make a decent beef (phrasing) at home. Or mail order. The only real trick is getting the proper bread.

I always ask the relatives when I visit "beef or burger?" The response is always 'hey, you can make that beef at home'.

But then a burger is a burger. You can only get an awesome beef (*snk* phrasing) online or at a proper spot. Y'all do y'all!

I lived in Iowa at least 20 years before ever going to a Culver's (not much of a fast food person). Until one day the current SO, after a chemo appointment was craving them - not in a position to say no.

I now have a double butter burger, an order of curds and a small flavour of the day custard once a month. Culver's really does have some of the others beat, hands down.

I do not however care for their crinkle cut fries. They're either undercooked or over in my experience.
