(The New York Times)   The post-Citizens United landscape: since 2009, $1 of every $13 in political donations came from just a dozen people; and the top 100 ZIP codes, less than 1% of the population, accounted for 20% of political groups' fundraising   (nytimes.com) divider line

Step 1 : reverse citizen united
Step 2 : make it a mandatory 25 years in prison felony if anyone gives over $20 to a political candidate
Step 3 : all political funding comes from the gov and everybody over 5% of votes gets the same money

Oh but Citizens United is GOOD.  It keeps the government from censoring free speech?

Ain't that right, Fark Moderates?

I agree, but who is going to do it? Both parties benefit as do the Corporations and wealthy elites.

This is gonna be another thing that We the People are going to have to rise up against.

Raise taxes on the rich. Let them contribute to government in other ways.

Welcome to the neo-monarchy.

Seems as though the system is working as its developers intended...

And the "top 100 zip codes" represent what fraction of the nation's wealth?

The best government that not your money can purchase.

mrparks: Welcome to the neo-monarchy.

Well, "MONarchy" is definitionally a single figurehead - this is more like an aristocracy.

And it's not exactly NEO- anything, since British aristocracy came to the US in two forms, enslavement (in the south) and moneypower (in the north); de Tocqueville said as much almost 200 years ago.

But other than that, spot on.

And 100% went to the worst people possible.

It's a farking mess. I don't think it matters after a point. Due to the internet, they literally had too much money in a few major races and couldn't spend it. Look at Maine. Collins was outfundraised and out spent and still won because if there is more dumbasses than voters with sense that's what happens.

Just tax political contributions at like 100% the filthy leeches that give millions only do it to get a return on their investment. If you raise the cost it won't be worth as much especially knowing some of it might accidentally make it's way into a program benefitting poor people.

So the data seems to suggest that once you reach a certain threshold additional fundraising doesn't matter much to a race, but what it does do is ensure future concessions from the winner. Corporations are investing in the future, not just the outcome of a race.

2b of it was Bloomberg (1.4) and Steyer (.6).  .5b was Adelson. Remaining .9 among 9 folks.

I'm not sure who you think you're talking to, exactly. Citizens United v. FEC was the right-wing media outfit suing to be allowed to post yet another lying smear using anonymous money near an election against Hillary Clinton. You know, the women all the Fark kook lefties hate.

If anything, we should expect all the bottom of the horseshoe idiots to be cheering Citizens United, at least as an organization.

Look man, when you've gotten so hostile that you start inventing arguments and attributing them to people who haven't spoken, maybe it's time to see a therapist

I mean, even AOC took $100k+ from Google and nearly $75k from Amazon.

Money is money, even for the most liberal of liberals.
