I'd be tempted to say the US or Taiwan, but it could just as easily been Russian directed. We used to watch for foreign equipment without an official designator knowing that much of it was Russians buying stuff "off the shelf" to assemble into spy equipment.

Olympic swimming is horseshiat with it's ridiculous medal counts. They need to knock that bullshiat off, if anything it's frankly unimpressive if you go to the olympics for swimming and don't pick up a few gold's. They pretty much hand them out as participation trophies at this point. There should only be freestyle. We don't have separate medals for running, skip running, backwards running, speed walking, sideways running, etc. You get a distance and you try to go faster than everyone else.

Also who even cares about swimming? It's something even the peak human athletes are pretty much shiat at as far as animals go. Might as well have a flying competition. At least distance running is something people are evolved for.

Considering the unmanned vehicles that can be deployed by the western military and the infinite resources we have to manufacture as many as we fookin' need, my confidence in the sustainability of Putin's wood-fire-fueled cardboard and cut-rate duct tape submarine fleet remains exceedingly low.

But who needs reinforcements or a supply chain when you're just going to throw a haymaker, right Vlad?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SOSUS

I did this in the Navy - a system of undersea microphones (or "hydrophones") that we'd listen to sub traffic and identify them as US, UK, Canada, Soviet, etc.  every sub makes a different noise (yes, we worshipped "the Hunt For Red October" as they gave us a shoutout early in the film: "the Navy's SOSUS nets didn't detect the silent submarine" - we'd all cheer.)

anyways.  late 90s the Navy was like, "Welp, the only boats in the ocean are the good guys, we don't need you anymore.  pick a new job."  I got out.  then I read about 2-3 years ago the Chinese and Russia are back in teh water.  there was an article that the gist was "Navy considering resuming Cold War antisubmarine program", which piqued my interest.  it was us.  the hydrophone nets as far as I know never went away, the program just became a very, very low priority.  but it seems like its coming back.

There is, in fact, a speed walking event, in addition to individual and relay events of varying distances, not to mention hurdles and the steeplechase.  But yeah, who even cares about swimming after typing two paragraphs about it? :-D

Varying distances is fine provided the distances vary enough to make it a fundamentally different event. Same with relay being a team effort it's fundamentally different from a solo event. The fact is speedwalkers aren't also multimedaling in full races shows that they aren't fundamentally the same. As it is swimmers usually compete in multiple strokes. It's dumb, you are just testing lung capacity and anerobic power output, the different strokes don't really matter.

Yeah, I think we're gonna be fine. Like you said, they don't remove stuff, they just turn it off or assign a skeleton crew to make sure that it is ready to be reactivated when it's needed.

We focus on activities that display impressive athletic feats, splashing about making a fool of yourself as you struggle to exceed the pace of a brisk walk is lame. It's not that other animals can do it, it's that basically any animal that can do it does it so much better that our best attempts look laughable. Just a bunch of hairless apes struggling not to drown.
