Why do you think any public speaking class always starts with the importance of making eye contact or at least appearing to do so with your audience.  It gets and holds their attention because they think you are speaking directly to them.  Same thing with performance artists, ie: singers, musicians.  Want the girls to scream, look in their general direction and they will swear up and down that you were singing directly to them.
