tl;dr:  Because we like to report on people who are too f*cking stupid to RTFM and all the warnings posted everywhere.

Tesla probably shouldn't have called it "Autopilot."  Probably "Assisted driving" or something.  Because your standard-grade moron hears "autopilot" and automagically thinks 'OOH I CAN HAVE THE CAR DO ALL THE DRIVING WHILE I SNORT COKE OFF THE BACK SEAT!!1!ONE!'

Because you just want clicks? I mean, do you report on every Chevy crash? Every Ford crash? I can see why people have a problem with this.

xanadian: Tesla probably shouldn't have called it "Autopilot."

THIS is the problem. Names matter. People really think it's going to be an "autopilot" if you call it that. If it isn't an autopilot, then don't name it that. Simple.

I mean, stupid people are also a problem, but this stupid naming convention is wrong from the beginning.

Urban legend. And I've been hearing that one since the mid 80s.

"Tesla's defenders tend to love to use the acronym "FUD," for "fear, uncertainty, and doubt," suggesting...

That is not what I understood FUD to mean.  I thought the latter two letters were "Up Details" with the initial letter being a lot of peoples' favourite four letter word with an "ed" on the end.

I think the bigger question is that Florida firemen still don't understand  lithium batteries.  You'd think that one in every pocket, one in every laptop, and others pretty much everywhere would start to make a dent in Florida Man's brain, but no.  They still insist on pouring water on lithium battery fires.

That Tesla inspires fear, uncertainty, and doubt?
Now, I'm no marketing whiz, but those aren't attributes that I would want attached to a very expensive object that you want people to buy.

Well, yeah.  FTFA: Tesla crashes are reported on for many reasons, including the defensive response by Tesla fans themselves, and the resulting comments and arguments feed into the cycle, and on and on it continues.

It's an old term/tactic, dating back to the 1970's in the mainframe computer industry, mainly used by IBM.  Basically, "You don't want to be the guinea pig to test some new guys' computer and have your boss fire you?  Stick with trusted Big Blue."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear,_uncertainty,_and_doubt

I think the modern usage is a little bit different from the historical use, though.

I haven't seen FUD used in any context where both acronym definitions wouldn't work.  Usually someone disseminating FUD plays fast and loose with the details or is at least being completely disingenuous.

I think the interesting thing about this particular crash is that despite nobody in the drivers seat, Tesla still claims the autopilot wasn't turned on, technical limitations wouldn't have allowed an autopilot to turn on in this stretch of road, and even if it could, the car wasn't even purchased with autopilot.

So if the car didn't even come with autopilot, wtf happened?

It is the weirdest cult of personality I've ever seen, even stranger than trump. Some weird south African guy with extremely shady motives and a libertarian bent (well, when it suits him), is somehow worshiped by people over here like some kind of religious figure. It has nothing to do with the cars, the capabilities, any of that. It's a cult of personality with a leader who continues to profit from pimping out his cult of personality, but should really be behind bars for stock manipulation and SEC non compliance...

Err... no. There's... there's just... all sorts of things wrong with what your saying.

He isn't a religious figure; he's a genius. Geniuses are weird. Sagan and Feynman, for example.

Shady motives? Motherfarker is going to Mars. M-A-R-S. Not to shove a bomb on it (probably, China would do that, actually...), not to garrison an Army, just wanting to prove humanity can. That ain't cheap.

Also; you don't invest in Tesla for their vehicles, you do it because of the Supercharger tech, and the stupid of money it's going to be licensed for. Read: European Green Initiative. There's the reason.

Also; his opinions are protected speech. The SEC already knows that - same with Bezos or Jobs, they pulled the same shiat. So did Edison... Westinghouse... Bell... Hmmm....

As for the Libertarian dogwhistle: Yeah, in a lot of ways he is the best example of it. Bill Gates, too. Libertarianism is a political, social and personal philosophy, but you can be:

Socialist-Libertarian: "If we share what we have with each other, earned through our own actions, we don't need to fear what we do not have." (Every SF utopia from Star Trek to LeGuin)

Anarcho-Libertarian: "All governmental, social and financial systems are rigged creations of intentional slavery and control. Only without their invisible cages can we see our possibilities." EVERY. HACKER. EVER.

Fascist-Libertarian: "Money is proof of karmic reward, and those wisest have the most money. You don't give away power, so don't give away money... and always do what the person holding the money says." (I Hate These People. You think 90% of us are this. We are not. These are assholes.)

Futurist: "Worry and fear are for lesser people. We are all created equal, and we need to work together for technological advancement, because that is the only avenue of salvation we have - leaving the old behind." (Musk is this. So's William Gibson. So were Von Braun, Oppenheimer, Brahe... this is a lot of us...)

Heinleiner (aka 'Arch-Libertarian'):

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

Me. Also; to add - "Walk the walk. Respect all. Love many. Hate few. Fear none. It took 4.6 billion years for you to get this life. Don't blow it."

/I would like that on my tombstone.

FTFA: Dodge has never pitched the Hellcat as the best choice for safe driving, and no Hellcat owners have angrily come at me telling me how I have blood on my hands because I'm standing in the way of everyone driving 700 hp cars.

\The only difference between Trumphumpers and Musk's cultist is the specific identity of the delusional narcissistic sociopath they worship.

Too bad for you that I don't "worship" anybody. I merely pointed out that there were plenty of automakers who have had cars with issues, but the focus on Tesla.

It must be hard for you to live such a rigid life that you can't notice when shiat like this happens you can't possibly see the obvious standing right in front of you because it conflicts with your pre-determined biases.

Maybe you don't worship the asshole - that's just a claim that comes a little thin since you popped into the thread to make the same stupid whine that come from Musk's cultists that the article is responding to.

You're literally pulling the same whattabout bullshiat, word for word.

The focus on Tesla is reasonable, and fully explained in TFA - but of course you're not going to read TFA so you can keep ignorantly posting incorrect bullshiat to attack someone for daring to say something unflattering about a billionaire you don't care about at all and it's just a total coincidence that you're echoing his cultists exactly.

Sure thing, pal.

Not a fanboy, but are there any Jalopnik stories about the Chevy SuperCruise cars?  Seems if they are as dedicated to this, we should find examples of other semiautonomous driving aids causing accidents.
