Subby nailed it.

I wanted very local freecycle+tool exchange (not my good ones, but the giant driveway squeegee for spreading asphalt sealant that I'd need in 3 or 4 years, sure). I got PNW light biatchiness and people who didn't understand that spreading talk of strong arm or home invasion robberies that were actually garage burglaries, mail thieves or porch pirates was going to get people killed. I nuked my account within a few days. fark those neighbors.

Never got the point of Nextdoor.  I already know my neighbors are assholes without ever talking to them.

/You think your kids are the greatest.  Nobody else wants to hear them banging around at 10 at night.

I think the concept was no one would be anonymous and thus not dickwads.

According to my neighborhood NextDoor groups, the concept was wrong.  Assholes gonna asshole.

It is also known as the following:  "Fireworks or Gunshots" and "The Lost Dog Network"

Ha! I'd also add to this: "Why is the police helicopter flying over X street."

Around here, it also includes bobcat sightings.

The last interaction I had on Nextdoor was responding to our HOA treasurer complaining about the sub-par $7 6" cheesesteak she got from Subway. My God, she couldn't even use a coupon!

It's not a bad place for references for trade work help, but other than that it's a place for Karens and racists.

I did have a nice experience when looking for someone to help me assemble a small utility trailer. A retired man came out and did it, but refused to take any money. He said he just liked to build things. I made him take a gift card for a restaurant he said he liked. We had a nice time working on it together and he was very kind.

I never thought I would say this, but my FB HoA page has become much more progressive. They've left these petty posts behind to focus on the true discussion of our time. Such as "Why is the ice cream man so loud," " Why can't I do X despite a written policy preventing it that nearly mirrors a city ordinance," and "Has anyone had their trash picked up? It's noon and mine hasn't been picked up the mayor needs to go!"

Is there any purpose to Nextdoor other than finding out where someone *might* have seen a fox or panicking that a group of sketchy looking people (black children) are on the playground?

"Twitter For Old People" has been the best general description I've seen.

I've had a few positive interactions through it but the general insipidness of it is hard to take. And that's before the racist f*ckwads infest the feeds.

I only have Nextdoor as sometimes old people list good stuff for free/cheap in their 'Marketplace' feature. Also for the lulz.

/Watch out, I spotted a fox today!
/Did anyone hear a loud BANG last night?
/I didn't get mail delivered today
/etc....

Mostly lost pets, here. I have quashed a couple of attempts from neighbors trying to get the city to take over our garbage/recycling pickup. Neighborhoods can either contract with one of 3 or 4 private waste management companies to provide service, which costs abou $20 per month, or petition the city to add service with an additional incremental proprty tax.

Every year or so, someone gets fed up with paying $20/month for garbage service, and wants to petition the city to take over. I then post the fairly simple math required to understand that the city service would actually cost about $100/month in additional taxes in our neighborhood, based on average home values. So far, that has shut down the passion to fire our private service.

They already have "warnings" if you post anything related to COVID or Politics.  No one pays attention to those warnings before they post their Conspiracy Theories, they are not going to pay attention to a warning about Racist content because no one thinks they are racist.

That was the kinda shiat I was hoping for but didn't find there. I hope run into folks like that old guy. I hope to be that guy in years to come. I'm over helping all but like four people moving ever again. Same four people I'd pick up at an airport. Help someone who needs a spare hand for a bit  because the doing of the thing is interesting.

This is the kind of stuff i really do not like, it removes my ability to readily spot and avoid actual racists fook nuts and keep them out of my social circles.

DO NOT HELP HIDE RACISM. Even if you are trying to help legit non racists who I guess are poor at their word choice communication skills.

This is like in video games, i want any player to be able to name themselves whatever stupid BatMansomerandomnumber name they want.
It's truth in advertising and saves me a fook ton of time to readily spot and avoid the players i generally won't have fun playing with, while allowing them to act as they will, which really helps me spot and avoid them better.

If an a hole wants to put their foot in their mouth, fooking let them.

Additionally i will also find the lop sided POV on matters, do we now need a special filter for chats for every kind of thing that any kind of person may find offense ever?
Personally i find it wrong to be of the POV that, these people who get offended at these thigns shall get protection from the offense, while these people who get offended at these things can just go suck it.

Personally by my POV, everyone should suck on a bit of what offends them, it makes you tougher. While if  always protected from any harm, we just become weaker from that process really, not stronger.

Necessity is the mother of invention, if you are not required to soak human BS, like yeah a fair % of us are still just poo flinging howler chimps to deal with. Then you're gonna be hella weak as an adult when you find reality is, there is no escape from human bs to be had. The answer to that is old and well established, if humans are too much bs for you, go be a hermit.

I'm tired of trying to give away things. Invariably, the first person who responds can't come get it for a couple of days and wants me to hold onto it for them. Forget that noise. I'm putting it on the porch and telling anyone who responds where it is and to come get it.

Last year, I decided to get rid of about 30-40 family board games to help alleviate boredom during the pandemic, and even listed them so people could pick what they wanted. Right out of the gate were people that wanted *all* of them. Lol no.

I packaged 4-5 and put names on the bags and still had people never show up to get them after negotiating what would work for their family. I'm glad to have the shelf room back, but man what a pain in the ass people can be when they're getting something for free.

My neighborhood has a mailing list for the stuff people are writing about here. Free lint found in my pocket, left on the stone wall at 123 Main Street for contactless pickup. A motorcycle drove past my house last night, did anybody else hear it?

I've seen some people do some pretty kind things for others on there, but honestly it's the exception rather than the rule. I try to stay out of conflict and just offer recommendations and advice when asked. I will alert people about scams because there really are a lot of gullible people living here. There's a mute function and I use it for any racists or Trump or Q crazies, of which there are quite a few.

I dunno, I've had a lot of positive experiences with it.

I've given away and sold quite a few things locally and it seemed to work a lot better than some of the alternatives.

I've had questions about HOA crap, building permits, and the local library and people were all helpful.

Oh, and I've gotten a few really good recommendations for contractor type jobs around the house.
